Examples of Using the Variables Tab

This topic provides several examples of using the Variables tab.

Using Clustering Instead of Stacking

  1. Create a stacked bar chart and open it in the Chart Editor.
  2. On the Variables tab, click the cell that displays Stack and select X Cluster.
  3. Click Apply.

Changing the Aesthetic Used for a Grouping Variable

  1. Create a grouped chart (such as a clustered chart or a grouped scatterplot) and open it in the Chart Editor.
  2. On the Variables tab, click the cell that displays the current aesthetic (such as Style: Color) and select a different aesthetic.
  3. Click Apply.

Converting from a Scatterplot Matrix to a 3-D Scatterplot

  1. Create a scatterplot matrix and open it in the Chart Editor.
  2. On the Variables tab, select Marker from the Element drop-down list.

This action creates a 2-D scatterplot that plots the first two variables in the matrix. The other variables are excluded.

  3. Assign one of the other variables to Z Axis. You can also change the variables on the other axes.
  4. Click Apply.

Converting from an Overlay Scatterplot to a Simple 2-D Scatterplot

  1. Create an overlay scatterplot and open it in the Chart Editor.

To convert the overlay scatterplot, you need to delete the extra overlaid elements. Eventually there will be only one element left.

  2. On the Variables tab, use Next and Previous to move to an overlaid element that you want to delete.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Repeat the previous two steps for each extra overlaid element.
  5. Click Apply.
