Cartridge label

The cartridge label should be applied with a permanent-type adhesive, so that it cannot be easily removed. It is affixed when the tape is first received by your installation. The label should contain the sequential volume serial number assigned by your installation; it may also identify your installation. The volume serial numbers are used to identify the tape cartridge by a unique number and to file the tapes in the tape rack. An example of a cartridge label is shown in Figure 1.

The external label must be applied within the indentation on the side of the cartridge; however, a larger information label, supplied by the customer, can be used on the top of the cartridge. An example of a cartridge label is shown in Figure 1. See System-Managed mountable tape external labels, System-Managed mountable tape external labels, Volume labels, and Tape label verification-automated tape library for more information on the cartridge external label.
