Expiration date on existing label

For a Version 3 volume with multiple data sets, the system checks the expiration date of the data set that immediately precedes the output data set. If the expiration date of the previous data set is later than the expiration date of the output data set, unless label validation has been suppressed, the label validation exit is entered.

If the previous data set's expiration date is equal to or greater than that of the output data set, then the expiration date of the output data set is compared with the current date. If the expiration date of the output data set has not been reached, then the operator confirms the use of the tape or mounts another tape. DFSMSrmm provides facilities that enable automation of handling expiration protection. See z/OS DFSMSrmm Implementation and Customization Guide for more information.

Any data sets following the output data set are treated as if they expired on the same day as the output data set.
