Optimizing data transfer by enabling Aspera FASP technology

If you use a remote server for storage pool protection or node replication and you experience network issues, you might want to optimize data transfer by using Aspera® Fast Adaptive Secure Protocol (FASP®) technology.

Procedure

  1. Ask your network administrator to verify whether the default range of ports for Aspera FASP network communications, 15100 - 15199, is appropriate for your system environment. The following items must be verified:
    • If you did not enable the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol for the server pair, verify whether the default range of ports can be used for Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) sockets.
    • Verify whether the default range of ports can be used for User Datagram Protocol (UDP) connections.
    • Verify whether the default range of ports is compatible with firewall rules.
  2. If the default range of ports does not meet the requirements that are described in step 1, change the port numbers by editing the dsmserv.opt file in the instance directory of the target server. Specify the FASPBEGPORT and FASPENDPORT options. For example, to specify port numbers in the range 2000 - 2199, add the following lines:
    faspbegport 2000
    faspendport 2199
  3. If you are using multiple network connections with Aspera FASP technology, and you want to ensure that sufficient bandwidth is available for all connections, specify the FASPTARGETRATE option. For instructions about specifying the option, see FASPTARGETRATE.
  4. Use Aspera FASP technology to transfer data by taking one of the following actions:
    • If you used the Operations Center to configure replication:
      1. On the Operations Center menu bar, hover over Storage and click Replication.
      2. Select a server pair and click Details.
      3. On the Details page, click Properties.
      4. In the General section, select the check box to enable Aspera FASP and click Save.
    • If you configured node replication without using the Operations Center:

Replicate nodes by issuing the REPLICATE NODE command and specifying the TRANSFERMETHOD=FASP parameter.

    • If you configured storage-pool protection without using the Operations Center:

Protect storage pool data by issuing the PROTECT STGPOOL command and specifying the TRANSFERMETHOD=FASP parameter.

    • If replication is not configured:
      1. On the Operations Center Overview page, click Storage > Replication.
      2. Click Add Server Pair. Follow the steps in the wizard. On the Transfer Protocol page, select the check box to enable Aspera FASP technology.

What to do next

To verify the speed of network throughput for node replication or storage pool protection, complete the following steps:
  1. On the Operations Center Overview page, click Storage > Replication.
  2. Select a source and target server pair and click Details.
  3. Review the information in the Speed over 2 Weeks pane.
