HP-UX: Taking the first steps after you install Tivoli Storage Manager
After you install Tivoli® Storage Manager Version 7.1.4, prepare for the configuration. Using the configuration wizard is the preferred method of configuring the Tivoli Storage Manager instance.

Update the kernel parameter values.
- Create the directories and user ID for the server instance. See HP-UX: Creating the user ID and directories for the server instance.
- Configure a Tivoli Storage
Manager instance.
Select one of the following options:
- Use the Tivoli Storage Manager configuration wizard, the preferred method. See HP-UX: Configuring Tivoli Storage Manager by using the configuration wizard.
- Manually configure the new Tivoli Storage
Manager instance.

steps during a manual configuration.
- Set up your directories and create the Tivoli Storage Manager instance. See HP-UX: Creating the server instance.
- Create a new server options file by copying the sample file to set up communications between the server and clients. See HP-UX: Configuring server and client communications.
- Issue the DSMSERV FORMAT command to format the database. See HP-UX: Formatting the database and log.
- Configure your system for database backup. See HP-UX: Preparing the database manager for database backup.
- Configure options to control when database reorganization runs. See HP-UX: Configuring server options for server database maintenance.
- Start the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance if it is not already started.
- Register your license. See HP-UX: Registering licenses.
- Prepare your system for database backups. See HP-UX: Specifying a device class in preparation for database backups.
- Monitor the server. See HP-UX: Monitoring the server.

To help avoid problems with database growth and server performance, the server automatically monitors its database tables and reorganizes them when needed. Before starting the server for production use, set server options to control when reorganization runs. If you plan to use data deduplication, ensure that the option to run index reorganization is enabled. - HP-UX: Starting the server instance
You can start the Tivoli Storage Manager server by using the instance user ID, which is the preferred method, or the root user ID. - HP-UX: Stopping the server
You can stop the server when needed to return control to the operating system. To avoid losing administrative and client node connections, stop the server only after current sessions are completed or canceled. - HP-UX: Registering licenses

You can create more than one server instance on your system. Each server instance has its own instance directory, and database and log directories. - HP-UX: Monitoring the server
When you start to use the server in production, monitor the space that is used by the server to ensure that the amount of space is adequate. Adjust the space if needed.
