Getting IBM Content Navigator up and running

To provide the IBM® Content Navigator web client to your users, you must install the prerequisite software, prepare your web application server and database, and install, configure, and deploy the web client. You might need to complete additional configuration tasks, depending on your content repository.

Tip: Before you install and configure IBM Content Navigator, you should review this topic and complete the Installation and configuration worksheets.

Follow these general steps to install and configure IBM Content Navigator. More information about completing each task is available from the links in the related information that is associated with each step.

Step 1 - Install and configure the prerequisite software

Before you can install IBM Content Navigator, you must install the prerequisite software on the server where you plan to install IBM Content Navigator and on your content repository server.

You must have the following software on the IBM Content Navigator server:
  • A supported web application server
  • IBM Content Manager OnDemand users:
    • Content Manager OnDemand Web Enablement Kit (ODWEK)
    • Transform software, such as the AFP2PDF conversion tool
In addition, you must have the following software in your content management environment:
  • A supported content management server
  • A database server where you can store the IBM Content Navigator web client configuration and preferences

After you install and configure the prerequisite software, you must complete the prerequisite tasks to prepare the IBM Content Navigator server for installation, configuration, and deployment.

Step 2 - Prepare your web application server and database server

Before you can install the IBM Content Navigator software on the server, complete the following tasks:
  1. Prepare your web application server:
    Web application server Pre-installation tasks
    WebSphere Application Server
    1. Copy your database JDBC drivers to the web application server

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, copy the JDBC drivers to the same directory on each node in the cluster.

    2. IBM FileNet P8 users only.Export the LTPA key from the Content Engine server
      Restriction: If you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in the same cell as Content Engine on WebSphere Application Server, you do not need to export the LTPA key.
    3. WebSphere Application Server Version 8 or later only: Disable the HTTPOnly settings on the web application server.
    Oracle WebLogic Server
    1. Add JDBC drivers to the web application server startup script.

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, add the JDBC drivers to each node in the cluster.

  2. Create a database for IBM Content Navigator on your database server.

Step 3 - Install IBM Content Navigator

You can install IBM Content Navigator by running the installation program or by running a silent installation. The installation program adds the files on the IBM Content Navigator server.

Important: If you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a clustered environment, you must install the IBM Content Navigator software on only one server in the cluster.
The tasks that you must complete after you install IBM Content Navigator depend on the type of repositories that you plan to connect to:
IBM FileNet P8 users
If you plan to use IBM Content Navigator with IBM FileNet P8, you must complete additional tasks before you can configure and deploy the web application. Go to Step 4 - Update Process Engine connector files.
IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition and IBM Content Manager OnDemand users
If you plan to use IBM Content Navigator with IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition or IBM Content Manager OnDemand, you must configure and deploy the web application. Go to Step 5 - Configure and deploy IBM Content Navigator.

Step 4 - Update Process Engine connector files (FileNet P8 only)

You must update the Process Engine client connector files before you can run the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool if:

  • You plan to use IBM FileNet P8 workflows in IBM Content Navigator
  • The version of the Process Engine client connector files that are installed with IBM Content Navigator do not match the version of the files on your Process Engine server
Tip: If your Content Engine client connector files are not at the correct version, you can update them when you run the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool.

Step 5 - Configure and deploy IBM Content Navigator

Before users can access the IBM Content Navigator web client, you must configure and deploy IBM Content Navigator on your web application server.

The configuration tasks that you must complete depend on which types of repositories you want to connect to from this instance of the IBM Content Navigator web client.

To configure and deploy IBM Content Navigator, you must complete the following tasks in the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool:
  1. Create a configuration profile:
    • Specify the type of web application server that you are deploying to and configure a connection to the web application server
    • Specify which types of repositories you want to connect to
  2. Configure the repositories that you are connecting to:
    Repository Configuration and deployment tasks
    IBM FileNet P8
    1. Download the correct versions of the Content Engine client connector files from the Content Engine server.
    2. If you plan to use IBM FileNet P8 workflows in IBM Content Navigator, configure the Process Engine connection point.
    IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition
    1. Configure the Content Manager connector.
    IBM Content Manager OnDemand
    1. Configure the Content Manager OnDemand connector.
  3. WebSphere Application Server user only: Configure the JDBC drivers on the web application server.
  4. Update the database script for your environment. You can also use the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool to run the script to build and populate the configuration database on your database server.
    Important: If you do not use the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool to run the script on your database, you must run the updated script on your database server to build and populate the IBM Content Navigator configuration table on your database instance. You must complete this step after you deploy the web application but before you administer the web client.
  5. Create the JDBC data source connection on the web application server.
  6. If you are connecting to an IBM FileNet P8 repository and are deploying on WebSphere Application Server, complete these additional tasks:
    1. Configure a connection to your Content Engine LDAP server. The values that you specify for IBM Content Navigator must match the values that are specified in your Content Engine configuration.

      If you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in the same cell as Content Engine on WebSphere Application Server, you do not need to configure the connection to your LDAP server.

    2. You must import the Content Engine LTPA keys to the IBM Content Navigator web application server.

      If you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in the same cell as Content Engine on WebSphere Application Server, you do not need to import the LTPA keys to the web application server.

  7. WebSphere Application Server users only: Configure JAAS authentication on the web application server.
  8. Build the IBM Content Navigator web application EAR file.
  9. After you build the web application EAR file, use the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool to deploy the application to the web application server.

After the IBM Content Navigator web application is successfully deployed to your web application server environment, you must complete several tasks on your web application server, and you must create and populate the IBM Content Navigator configuration table on your database server.

Step 6 - Configure your web application server and database

After you configure and deploy IBM Content Navigator, complete the following tasks

  1. Configure your web application server:
    Web application server Post-configuration tasks
    WebSphere Application Server
    1. Set the ODWEK library path environment variable if you plan to use IBM Content Navigator to access IBM Content Manager OnDemand repositories.

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, you must add the ODWEK library environment variable to each node in the cluster.

    2. Add the viewer library files to the WebSphere Application Server environment variables to enable HTML and PDF file conversions.

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, you must add the viewer library files to each node in the cluster.

    Oracle WebLogic Server
    1. Set the ODWEK library path environment variable if you plan to use IBM Content Navigator to access IBM Content Manager OnDemand repositories.

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, you must add the ODWEK library environment variable to each node in the cluster.

    2. Add the viewer library files to the Oracle WebLogic Server startup script to enable HTML and PDF file conversions.

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, you must add the viewer library files to each node in the cluster.

    3. Add the JAAS security arguments to the Oracle WebLogic Server startup script.

      Highly Available ClustersIf you plan to deploy IBM Content Navigator in a highly available cluster, you must add the JAAS security arguments to each node in the cluster.

  2. If you did not use the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool to run the script on your database, run the database configuration script to create and populate the IBM Content Navigator configuration table on the database instance where you plan to store IBM Content Navigator configuration data.
  3. Restart your web application server.
  4. Verify your IBM Content Navigator deployment.

Step 7 - Configure the web client

After you configure and deploy the web application, you must administer the web client to enable users to connect to the repositories in your environment.

At a minimum, you must complete the following tasks before users can access the web client:
  1. Configure the administrators for the web client. You created an initial administrator when you ran the IBM Content Navigator Configuration and Deployment Tool; however, you should specify additional administrators for the web client.
  2. IBM Content Manager OnDemand users only.If you are connecting to an IBM Content Manager OnDemand repository, configure settings that are shared by all of the Content Manager OnDemand servers in your environment, such as the language in which ODWEK returns messages.
  3. Configure connections to each repository that you want to connect to.
  4. Create and configure one or more desktops to specify what features and repositories users can access.

After you complete the required administration tasks, send the URLs for your desktops to your users.
