Manageability enhancements

Version 10.1 provides enhancements that make it easier to manage DB2® environments, reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO), reduce the impact of performing system management tasks, and extend the capabilities of the autonomic features introduced in previous releases.

Row compression rates and ease of use have improved
DB2 V10.1 features some major enhancements to row compression, including improved compression rates, improved ease of use, and higher data availability.
Multi-temperature data storage can provide fast access to data
You can manage your IT budget more efficiently by configuring your database so that only frequently accessed data (hot data) is stored on expensive fast storage, such as solid-state drives (SSD), and infrequently accessed data (cold data) is stored on slower, less-expensive storage, such as low-rpm hard disk drives.
Storage management has been improved
A major advance in DB2 V10.1 is the ability to create storage groups, which are groups of storage paths. A storage group contains storage paths with similar characteristics.
Table spaces inherit media attributes from storage groups
When you use the CREATE TABLESPACE statement to create a table space, you can specify that the table space dynamically inherits media attributes from its associated storage group. You can also use the ALTER TABLESPACE statement to have an existing table space inherit media attributes from its storage group.
New mechanism to reclaim unused space in indexes
A new mechanism to reclaim unused space in indexes has been introduced to provide a more efficient way to free space for indexes that reside in DMS table spaces.
New insert time clustering tables
Insert time clustering (ITC) tables provide an effective way of maintaining data clustering and easier management of space utilization.
The db2move command now supports parallel processing
In specific cases, the db2move command supports parallel processing.
Partitioned tables remain accessible to queries when a data partition is added or attached
The process of adding or attaching a data partition to a partitioned table by using the ALTER TABLE statement with the ADD PARTITION or ATTACH PARTITION clause has been enhanced. The partitioned table now remains accessible to dynamic queries running under the RS, CS, or UR isolation level.
