IBM Streams 4.3.0

System requirements for the Quick Start Edition for Linux

Before you download and install the Quick Start Edition, ensure that you satisfy the minimum system requirements.

Hardware requirements for the Quick Start Edition for Linux

Table 1. Minimum hardware requirements for IBM Streams
Component Minimum requirements Comments
System x86_64 (64-bit)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Community Enterprise Operating System (CentOS)
  • [Requires IBM Streams 4.3.1] SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)
IBM Power Systems™ (64-bit)

RHEL systems that are running little endian support the POWER8® processor only.

Display 1280 x 1024 Lower resolutions are supported but not preferred for Streams Studio.
Memory 2 GB The amount of memory that is required by IBM Streams is dependent on the applications that are developed and deployed.

This minimum requirement is based on the memory requirements of the Commodity Purchasing sample application and other samples that are provided with the product.

Disk space If installing the main installation package:
  • 7 GB for the installation package and extraction
  • 4 GB for the /tmp directory or other temporary directory, if specified by setting the IATEMPDIR environment variable. This space is cleaned up and available after the installation completes.
  • 8.5 GB for the installation directory
Includes disk space required for installation and development resources only. Additional disk space is needed to run IBM Streams. The amount depends on how you set up and configure your Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment.

For more information about using the IATEMPDIR environment variable to configure a different temporary directory for installation processing, see the Preinstallation roadmap.

If installing the domain host installation package or resource installation package:
  • 1.2 GB for the installation package and extraction
  • 400 MB for the /tmp directory or other temporary directory, if specified by setting the IATEMPDIR environment variable. This space is cleaned up and available after the installation completes.
  • 1.5 GB for the installation directory

Software requirements for the Quick Start Edition for Linux

Before you install the Quick Start Edition, ensure that you satisfy the software requirements for IBM Streams. To check these requirements on your system, IBM Streams provides a dependency checker script that you run before installing the Quick Start Edition.

Operating system requirements
The following table lists the supported operating system versions on x86_64 and IBM Power Systems.
Table 2. Supported operating system versions for IBM Streams
Operating system System hardware and architecture Supported operating system versions

IBM Streams supports the IBM Power Systems POWER7® and POWER8 processors.

Version 6.6, or later
Version 7.0, or later
ppc64le (little endian)

IBM Streams supports the IBM Power Systems POWER8 processor.

Version 7.1, or later
CentOS x86_64 Version 6.6, or later

[Requires IBM Streams 4.3.1] SLES x86_64 Version 12.4 or later
Java™ requirements and options

For application development, IBM Streams supports the IBM SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8 and the Java SE Development Kit 8 from Oracle.

The IBM SDK is installed when you install the Quick Start Edition.

Required RPMs

To operate correctly, IBM Streams requires a set of prerequisite RPMs.

The dependency checker script that you run before installing the Quick Start Edition identifies any required RPMs that are not installed. This script assumes that you have installed the minimum required RPMs for your operating system.

Graphical user interface requirement for the Quick Start Edition for Linux

An X Window System is required to use the IBM Streams graphical user interfaces and the Commodity Purchasing sample application. Alternative options are available if you do not have an X Window System installed.

An X Window System is required for the following IBM Streams interfaces:
  • Domain Manager
  • Streams Console
  • Streams Studio on Linux
