Monitoring the system

When you monitor system and collection activities, you can view the status of various processes, watch for potential problems, or adjust configuration settings to enhance performance.

In the administration console, you can monitor the system and adjust operations as needed. You can view detailed statistics for each major activity (crawling, parsing, and search processing). The statistics include average response times and progress information, such as how many documents were crawled or indexed during a session.

By clicking icons, you can stop and start most activities. For example, you might need to stop a server to make changes to its configuration or troubleshoot a problem, and restart processing when you are ready to allow the activity to proceed.

On the Server Configuration page of the System view, you can view the system topology. In this view, you can quickly see the server host names and IP addresses, see the role of each server in the system (such as whether it is a master server or a server dedicated to search or document processing), and see how the servers interconnect.

Use the Server Configuration page to start and stop individual servers or multiple servers at the same time, add servers to the system, remove servers from the system. For a search server, you can also monitor query processing statistics, such as request processing performance and history.
