Frequency of scans and uploads of data

When you enable software and capacity scans, their default frequency meets auditing requirements. If you want to change the default frequency, ensure that the new setup fulfills the minimal requirements and all considerations.

Frequency of scans

Default and minimal frequency of scans is the same in the BigFix® and disconnected scenario.
Table 1. Frequency of scans
Type of the scan Default frequency Minimal frequency Method of scheduling the scan Comments
Capacity scan Every 30 minutes Every 30 minutes For information about scheduling the scan, see the following links.

In case of subcapacity reporting, it is necessary to capture configuration of vCPU to count the maximum capacity of processor cores for each program concurrently. To ensure that dynamic changes of the vCPU configuration are captured, the capacity scan must run every 30 minutes. You can change the frequency of the scan only if you use License Metric Tool for purposes other than subcapacity reporting.

Software scan Once per week Once per month For information about scheduling the scan, see the following links. You can adjust the frequency of the software scan to the dynamics with which software inventory changes in your environment.
Scan of VM managers Every 30 minutes Every 30 minutes For information about scheduling the scan, see: Adding VM managers in local and central mode.

In case of subcapacity reporting, it is necessary to capture mobility of VMs. To ensure that it is captured, data from VM managers must be collected every 30 minutes. You can change the frequency of collecting data only if you use License Metric Tool for purposes other than subcapacity reporting.

Shared disks scan Once per week Once per month For information about scheduling the scan, see: Discovering software on shared disks (BigFix scenario). This type of scan is not available in the disconnected scenario.

Frequency of uploading scan results

Software and capacity data in the BigFix scenario
Upload of data from the scanned computer to the BigFix server occurs according to a frequency that is specific to the type of the scan. The data is then uploaded from the BigFix sever to the License Metric Tool server during the import.
Table 2. Frequency of uploading scan results in the BigFix scenario
Type of uploaded results Frequency Method of uploading the data
Capacity scan When results change in comparison to the results of the previous scan. Upload of capacity scan results is scheduled automatically when you schedule the capacity scan.
Software scan When results change in comparison to the results of the previous scan. For information about scheduling the upload, see: Uploading software scan results (BigFix scenario).
Software and capacity data in the disconnected scenario
Data from the scanned computer is uploaded to a disconnected data source that is located on the same computer as the License Metric Tool server.
Table 3. Frequency of uploading scan results in the disconnected scenario
Type of uploaded results Frequency Method of uploading the data Comments
Disconnected capacity and software scan
  • Daily (recommended)
  • Weekly
For information about scheduling the scan, see: Setting up daily transfer of scan results to the License Metric Tool server (disconnected scenario). Results of software and capacity scans from disconnected computers need to be transferred to a disconnected data source that is located on the same computer as the License Metric Tool server. You can transfer the data by using Ansible playbooks or, in case of License Metric Tool Lite, the automation technology of your choice. It is recommended to upload the results daily. However, weekly upload of data is also possible.
VM managers data
Frequency of uploading data from VM managers depends on the VM Manager Tool deployment type.
Table 4. Frequency of uploading scan results
Type of the VM Manager Tool Frequency Method of uploading the data Comments
Local None N/A The data is already available on the License Metric Tool server.
Central and distributed Every 12 hours Upload of results from VM managers is scheduled automatically when you configure connection to VM managers.
Disconnected Daily For information about uploading the data, see: Setting up daily transfer of scan results to the License Metric Tool server (disconnected scenario). Results from VM managers are packed together with results of software and capacity scan from the disconnected computer on which the VM Manager Tool is installed. They need to be transferred to a disconnected data source that is located on the same computer as the License Metric Tool server. You can transfer the data by using Ansible playbooks or, in case of License Metric Tool Lite, the automation technology of your choice.
