Performing an IPL to dedicated service tools

Use this procedure to perform an initial program load (IPL) to dedicated service tools (DST).

About this task

This procedure is applicable for the entire system, or if logical partitions are installed, for the primary partition.

To perform an IPL, complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. Select a type B IPL in manual mode.
Attention: For systems with logical partitions, you must power down the secondary partitions normally before you perform an IPL on the primary partition to avoid possible data loss.
  2. Perform one of the following options:
    • If there is a problem log entry after powering on the system, perform a delayed power-off. (This is the data for problem analysis.) When the system is off, press the Power button on the control panel to perform an IPL. If the delayed power-off takes longer than 40 minutes to complete, select function 03.
Attention: Performing function 03 might damage objects, and it might also cause data loss.
    • If there is an attention light after powering on the system, use the increment (↑) or decrement (↓) button to select control panel function 03. Press Enter on the control panel to perform an IPL.
    • When the system is powered off, press the Power button on the control panel to perform an IPL.

The IPL or Install the System display is shown on the console.

  3. Select the Use Dedicated Service Tools option. The DST Sign On display is shown.
  4. Sign on to DST with a valid user ID and password.
Remember: Enter a valid user ID and get the password from the customer. If the customer changed the full DST authority, user ID, or password, ask the customer for the correct values.
    Notes:
    • If prompted to change the password, be sure to provide the new (changed) password to the customer.
    • You are limited to three sign-on attempts to DST. After three unsuccessful attempts, the service tools user ID is disabled. A user ID with a service tool security privilege must reset the ID.
The Use Dedicated Service Tools (DST) display is shown.
Restriction: The system is in the limited paging environment.

    This ends the procedure.
