Control panel options

Use the IBM® Virtual or Remote Control Panel to use control panel functions through a PC.

There are two control panel options available:
  • Virtual Control Panel that is available in IBM i Access Client Solutions.
  • Remote Control Panel that is available as part of the Operations Console feature in IBM i Access for Windows.

You can perform most of the control panel functions available on a physical IBM i control panel from a local or remote PC using one of the above options. Virtual Control Panel is capable of connecting to a LAN or to an HMC-configured console. The Remote Control Panel option is only available for LAN-configured consoles.

All user IDs that require access must be given the appropriate authority. The user must be granted access to the control panel of a logical partition and access to the functions to use the partition control panel key. The partition control key controls the operation mode of a control panel. If the control panel is in manual mode, the user-privilege operator-panel function is required to perform a function or operation. To change the mode, you must authenticate the connection and you must have the authority to the respective logical partition's keylock.

The Remote control panel option uses device IDs. Automatically created device IDs do not have access to the remote control panel. You must manually grant access to users and service tools device IDs for the remote control panel and the logical partition. By default, user-created device IDs have these permissions. All user IDs that require access must be given the appropriate authority and device IDs.

The default access to the remote control panel for the automatically created device IDs can be changed in the Dedicated Service Tools (DST) (http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER8/p8eaj/dst.htm). Log in to DST by using the service tools user ID. For more information, see Work with service tools user IDs (http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER8/p8eaj/chgdst.htm) or the DST can also be activated by using the operation panel function 21. For more information, see Selecting function 21 from the control panel (http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER8/p8eaj/pxect_x21.htm).
