IV54714: FILE CONTENTS MAY BE ERASED WHEN EDITING AND SAVING A FILE IN THE EXPLORER

Error description

  • You are trying to edit a file using the Explorer.  When you go
    to save the file you receive the following message:
    
      IZE0815E Save of file xxxxxx.xxxxx.xxxx(xxxxxxx) failed:
      Unable to save xxxxxxx -File transfer failed. File contains
      records that are longer than the LRECL of the new file.
      Transfer aborted due to file error
    
    This error indicates that one or more lines of the file
    contains more characters then the LRECL size, so the save of
    the file failed.  In addition the contents of the file were
    lost.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • A seqential or partitioned data set member is opened for editing
    using the IBM Explorer for z/OS. Text in the data set is altered
    such that one or more lines are longer then the LRECL limit.
    The data set is saved, and the following message is reported:
     IZE0815E Save of file xxxxxx.xxxxx.xxxx(xxxxxxx) failed: Unable
    to save xxxxxxx -File transfer failed.
    File contains records that are longer than the LRECL of the new
    file. Transfer aborted due to file error
    The data set remains open in the z/OS Explorer editor. The new
    contents will have been written to z/OS up until (but not
    including) the line that exceeds LRECL. All data after this
    point in the data set will have been erased.
    

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Explorer for z/OS has been updated. The data set editor will
    now validate LRECL when an attempt is made to save a sequential
    data set, or partitioned data set member. Lines longer than
    LRECL will be decorated as errors, and the save to z/OS will not
    be attempted.
    Affected lines must be altered to not exceed the LRECL value
    before the data set can be saved.
    This fix will be made available in Version 2.1.0.5 of the IBM
    Explorer for z/OS, which will be included in Version 5.1.1.5 of
    the CICS Explorer.
