Tips:
- Newer software levels are also supported. For IBM Spectrum Control, an upgrade to a later version might be required, particularly for new functions. IBM Storage Insights is automatically upgraded. If any problems occur when you use newer software levels, open a support case. IBM Support can then investigate the problem and attempt to resolve it. You can open cases for IBM Spectrum Control or IBM Storage Insights at https://www.ibm.com/mysupport.
Limitations and considerations
- In 5.4.0 and later, provisioning in IBM Spectrum Control is no longer supported. While this feature might appear in the GUI, it might not work as intended.
- 1 Performance monitoring is supported starting with Spectrum Control 5.4.0.
For Spectrum Control, performance monitoring is not supported when Spectrum Control is installed on AIX®.
For Storage Insights, you cannot monitor Hitachi VSP storage systems using a Storage Insights data collector installed on AIX®.
- Performance monitoring requirements:
- Hitachi Device Manager
- You must set the Hitachi Performance Monitor Monitoring Switch to Enabled in the Hitachi Device Manager and then set the Sample Interval to 1 minute or 5 minutes only. Any other interval options are not supported. If performance monitoring is already enabled at an unsupported interval and you want to keep the previous monitoring data, first export the data by using the "Export Tool" and then restart monitoring.
- Important: When you set the Sample Interval in Hitachi Device Manager to 1 minute or 5 minutes, there will be a gap in the performance data after performance monitoring starts because no data is accumulated. Depending on the value of the Performance Monitor interval in IBM Storage Insights, the resulting gap in performance data might be 35 minutes or 90 minutes.
- "Export Tool"
- If you have more than one model of Hitachi storage system, you must download the version of the "Export Tool" for each model.
- Important: To collect performance metadata, the "Export Tool" requires that the password for connecting to the storage system is temporarily stored as clear text in a file on the server where the data collector is installed. For security reasons, ensure access to that server is restricted to key personnel. The file is automatically deleted after metadata is collected.
- For information about how to use the Hitachi Performance Monitoring and the "Export Tool", see the Hitachi documentation at https://knowledge.hitachivantara.com/Documents/Storage.

Restrictions
- In replication relationships, any snapshot volumes in either source or target storage systems that are not assigned to a host, are not stored in IBM Spectrum Control or IBM Storage Insights. The volumes are listed in the Copy Data page but do not have hyperlinks.
Monitoring Hitachi Data Systems devices via the Hitachi Device Manager SMI-S provider is supported only in IBM Spectrum Control:

Limitations and considerations
- 2 In 5.4.0 and later, provisioning in IBM Spectrum Control is no longer supported. While this feature can appear in the GUI, it might not work as intended.
Learn more about IBM Spectrum Control
IBM Spectrum Control is an on-premises storage management, monitoring, and reporting solution for storage systems, hypervisors, servers, fabrics, and switches.
- For more information about the capabilities of IBM Spectrum Control, see IBM Docs.
- For more information about the storage systems that are supported by Spectrum Control, see Supported Storage Products.
Learn more about IBM Storage Insights
IBM Storage Insights is a complementary offering to IBM Spectrum Control. It's an off-premise, IBM Cloud service that provides cognitive support capabilities, monitoring, and reporting for storage systems, fabrics, and switches.
- For more information about the capabilities of IBM Storage Insights, see IBM Docs.
