What is new in V8.5

WebSphere® Application Server is a proven, high-performance transaction engine that can help you build, run, integrate, and manage dynamic business applications. This release introduces key enhancements to help you succeed in the current dynamic and competitive marketplace by introducing the new lightweight Liberty profile and by offering breakthrough advances in developer productivity, application server resiliency, and improved operational efficiency.

New Liberty profile: a lightweight application foundation
The Liberty profile is a highly composable, fast to start, ultra lightweight profile of the application server that is optimized for developer productivity and smaller, simpler production server deployments. Use Liberty profile to jump-start application development, and speed project completion. You can download the Liberty profile from the WASdev community page, or by using the Installation Manager.

WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5 extends its rich application development and deployment environment to also provide the following enhanced capabilities:

  • Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) support in OSGi applications
  • Support for WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition V7.0 as an optional pluggable JDK
  • Support for a new migration toolkit to help you not only migrate your applications, but to identify and resolve application problems before migration

About Refresh Pack 8.5.5
Refresh pack WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5.5 introduces a new Liberty profile-only solution. The WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core edition is built to leverage the lightweight and dynamic aspects of the Liberty profile. Scoped to the capabilities of Web Profile applications, the new edition is ideal for lightweight production servers. More information is available in the What is new for Version 8.5.5 document, and the product documentation.
About Fix Pack 8.5.5.3

Several cumulative fixes are bundled into a single maintenance package for a specific combination of product and platform. Each maintenance package is referred to as version 8.5.5.3.

Installing Fix Pack 8.5.5.3 with IBM Installation Manager raises the fix level of your product to version 8.5.5.3.

Fix Pack 8.5.5.3 for WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5.5 can be installed using the live service repository that contains the fix pack. Use Installation Manager on your local system to update WebSphere Application Server Version 8.5.5 with the fix pack from the live web-based service repositories. To Install Fix Pack 8.5.5.3 using the web-based ("live") repository provided by IBM, go through the installation instructions in the Steps for installing Fix Pack 8.5.5.3 section.

If you are using a local repository for installing a fix pack, IBM Installation Manager should point to the XML local import repository in order to apply any future maintenance. There is no separate download required for IBM WebSphere SDK Java Technology Edition V6 for the full profile. It is included in the Application Server and Supplements ZIP files, which are available for download from the Fix Pack Version 8.5.5.3 download page.

Steps for installing Fix Pack 8.5.5.3

Installing fix packs on distributed operating systems using the GUI

IBM Installation Manager is used to apply product maintenance to WebSphere Application Server.

Make sure that the web-based or local service repository location is listed and checked or that the Search service repositories during installation and updates option is selected on the Repositories panel in your Installation Manager preferences. For more information on using service repositories with Installation Manager, read the IBM Installation Manager Version 1.5 product documentation.

1. Log on to your system.

2. Stop all servers and applications on the WebSphere Application Server installation that is being updated.

3. Start Installation Manager.

4. Click Update.

Note: If you are prompted to authenticate, use the IBM ID and password that you use to access protected IBM software websites.

5. Select the package group to update.

Tip: If you select Update all, Installation Manager will search all of the added and predefined repositories for recommended updates to all of the package groups that it has installed. Use this feature only if you have full control over which fixes are contained in the targeted repositories. If you create and point to a set of custom repositories that include only the specific recommended fixes that you want to install, you should be able to use this feature confidently. If you enable searching service repositories or install fixes directly from other live web-based repositories, then you might not want to select this option so that you can select only the fixes that you want to install for each offering on subsequent panels.

6. Click Next.

7. Select the version to which you want to update your product.

8. Select any fixes that you want to install and in this case select 8.5.5.3 Fix Pack.

Any recommended fixes are selected by default.

If there are recommended fixes, you can select the option to show only recommended fixes and hide non-recommended fixes.

9. Click Next.

10. Accept the terms in the license agreements, and click Next.

11. Select the optional features that you want in your updated installation if available.

12. Review the summary information, and click Update.

  • If the installation is successful, the program displays a message indicating that installation is successful.
  • If the installation is not successful, click View Log File to troubleshoot the problem.

13. Click Finish.

14. Click File > Exit to close Installation Manager.
