Additional information
You can find additional product information on the WebSphere Application Server for IBM i Version 7.0 documentation page.

The os400_readme_updateinstaller.html file in the Fix Pack contains more detailed information about applying Fix Packs.

Note: Fix Pack 7.0.0.33 needs to be installed using Update Installer version 7.0.0.33 or later. If earlier versions of Update Installer are used, prerequisite checking may fail with the following message:

"Prerequisite checking has failed. Failure messages follow:
A general exception has occurred during prerequisite checking. Check the log files for more information."

Users will see the following in the log file: ClassNotFoundException for StackDependencyPrereqChecking.

Note: If 7.0.0.33 is retrieved via an IBM i Group PTF, then the 7.0.0.33 Update Installer does not need to be downloaded. The Fix Pack 33 images for Express, Base, Network Deployment, Application Client, DMZ Secure Proxy Server and Web Server Plug-ins are also included in the Group PTF for 7.0.0.33, and they do not need to be downloaded either. However the Group PTF for 7.0.0.33 does not contain Feature Pack images.

For IBM WebSphere DMZ Proxy Server users:
The DMZ Secure Proxy Server for IBM WebSphere Application Server installation allows you to install your proxy server in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), while reducing the security risk that might occur if you choose to install an application server in the DMZ to host a proxy server. The risk is reduced by removing any functionality from the application server that is not required to host the proxy servers, but that could pose a security risk. Installing the secure proxy server in the DMZ rather than the secured zone presents new security challenges. However, the secure proxy server is equipped with capabilities to provide protection from these challenges. For detailed information on WebSphere DMZ Secure Proxy Server visit this Link.

Space requirements
Space requirements vary depending on what you are installing. The size of each download is available on the Support site. For a Fix Pack, you will need approximately 800 MB of free space.

Verify that the free space is available before beginning the installation. After the Fix Pack is installed, Fix Pack 33 increases the IBM WebSphere Application Server installation and run-time footprints by a small amount.

Space is also required for backup files in the /properties/version/backup directory of the product installation root. The space required is about the same as the size of the Fix Pack.

When installing Fix Pack 33, the update installer checks for required disk space in the /tmp directory and in the backup directory. If the /tmp directory or the backup directory have insufficient space, the update installer issues a warning message and stops the update.

Steps for installing Fix Pack 33

A. Prepare
  1. Verify required disk space.

  2. Obtain the update installer V7.0.0.33 downloadable package that you need from Update Installer for V7.0 page on product support web site. Unzip or unjar the package and install it. You can install the update installer remotely from a Windows workstation or locally from the IBM i Qshell command line. The install executable is located in the UpdateInstaller directory after you extract the contents of the downloaded package.

  3. (Optional) Delete the update installer ZIP file if you need more space.

  4. Obtain the Fix Pack 33 downloadable package that you need from the WebSphere Application Server V7.0 Fix Pack 33 download page. Download the Fix Pack 33 maintenance package to the updi_install_root/maintenance directory. Where updi_install_root is the directory to which you installed the update installer. Usually this is the following directory:

  5. /QIBM/ProdData/WebSphere/UpdateInstaller/V7/UPDI

  6. Stop all Java™ processes that use the WebSphere Application Server product you are updating. These processes include all application server processes, the nodeagent process, the deployment manager process, and any WebSphere Application Server client applications.

  7. Start the host servers if they are not currently active:

  8. STRHOSTSVR *ALL

  9. Ensure that as little activity as possible is occurring on the system. Do not put the system in restricted state or the Fix Pack install will fail.

  10. You can choose to install the Fix Pack interactively or by submitting the install as a batch job. The recommended method is to submit the install as a batch job. Follow the steps below to install the Fix Pack using the SBMJOB command.

Note: The SBMJOB command will submit the job to the QBATCH subsystem by default. Also by default, the QBATCH subsystem allows only one active job.

You can control what subsystem the job runs in by specifying the JOBQ parameter. For example, JOBQ(QSYSNOMAX) submits the job to the QSYSWRK subsystem by default which allows an unlimited number of jobs.

Ensure that the storage pool in which the job runs has at least 512 MB of memory available to be used by the updateinstaller. More memory will improve the performance time of the Fix Pack install.

B. Apply
  1. If your ID has no authority to *ALLOBJ, sign on to your iSeries server with a user ID that has enough authority.

  2. Use the Submit Job command to invoke the update script:

  3. SBMJOB CMD(STRQSH CMD('updi_install_root/update -W product.location=was_install_root')) JOB(UPDATEWAS) ALWMLTTHD(*YES) JOBQ(QSYS/QSYSNOMAX)

Where updi_install_root is the directory under which the update installer is installed and was_install_root is the directory under which the product you wish to update is located.

    For example:

    SBMJOB CMD(STRQSH CMD('/QIBM/ProdData/WebSphere/UpdateInstaller/V7/UPDI/update -W product.location=/QIBM/ProdData/WebSphere/AppServer/V71/Express')) JOB(UPDATEWAS) ALWMLTTHD(*YES) JOBQ(QSYS/QSYSNOMAX)

If the updi_root/maintenance directory contains more than one .pak file, add the -W maintenance.package=fullyQualifiedPakFileName parameter to the CMD parameter above. For example:
    -W maintenance.package=/QIBM/ProdData/WebSphere/UpdateInstaller/V7/UPDI/maintenance/7.0.0-WS-WAS-i5osPPC-FP00000033.pak

  4. Wait for the submitted job to complete. A Fix Pack install can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on your system. If enough memory is not available, the install can take much longer, for example 22 hours or even longer.

  5. Once the job has completed, check the updatelog.txt file to see if the install was successful. The last lines of the file should indicate INSTCONFSUCCESS. The log file is located under the following directory:

  6. was_install_root/logs/update/7.0.0-WS-WAS-i5osPPC-FP00000033.install

  7. Restart the HTTP Administrative instance if it was active during the update.

  8. ENDTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(*ADMIN)
    STRTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(*ADMIN)

  9. Restart any Web Server instances which are associated with V7.0 application servers if any were active during the update.

Known issues

Known side-effects
The following are useful tips:
  1. Customers wishing to install Fix Pack 7.0.0.33 must use the latest version of Update Installer, which can be obtained from the Update Installer version 7.0 download page.

  2. Adjustments are required to WebSphere MQ resource adapter configuration when updating WebSphere Application Server Version 7.0 profiles. Users of WebSphere MQ messaging provider, WebSphere MQ link, or the WebSphere MQ server may need to perform some manual steps when changing maintenance levels. Information on the affected profiles and what steps are required can be obtained from Adjusting the WebSphere MQ resource adapter configuration when migrating profiles between maintenance level 7.0.0.0 and later levels.

Note: If 7.0.0.33 is retrieved via an IBM i Group PTF, then the Update Installer does not need to be downloaded. The Fix Pack 33 images for Express, Base, ND, Application Client, DMZ Secure Proxy Server, and Web Server Plug-ins are also included in the Group PTF for 7.0.0.33, and they do not need to be downloaded either. However the Group PTF for 7.0.0.33 does not contain Feature Pack images.

3. Potential security vulnerability when using Web based applications on IBM WebSphere Application Server due to Java HashTable implementation vulnerability (PM53930). For more information on the fix for this issue can be obtained from this Link.
