Abstract

This document details the Hardware & Software requirements for the IBM Spectrum Protect™ VSS Requestor 8.1.6 component.

The IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component supports:

  • VSS operations in Microsoft Exchange environments
  • VSS operations in Microsoft SQL Server environments
  • VSS operations for the File System and Custom Application features contained in the MMC Snapin and Base System Services component.

Minimum hardware requirements

The following information describes the minimum hardware and disk space requirements when using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.6 component.


x64 Hardware

The following hardware is supported for the x64 platform:

  • Compatible hardware supported by the operating system and the application environment being protected


x64 Disk Space

The following disk space is required for the x64 platform:

  • A minimum of 930 MB of disk space for the product to be installed.
  • At least 46 MB disk space for "Additional Microsoft prerequisites" which will be installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system when starting the FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor component installation.

TIP: Some of the prerequisites defined in this document may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirement prerequisites detailed in the"Additional Microsoft prerequisites" section of this document are installed before starting the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor installation process.

Minimum software and operating system requirements

The following information describes the minimum software and operating system requirements when using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component.


Operating Systems


x64 Operating Systems

The following operating systems are supported for the x64 platform:

  • 64-bit Windows Server 2012, and later maintenance levels: Essentials, Standard or Data Center editions
  • 64-bit Windows Server 2012 R2, and later maintenance levels: Essentials, Standard or Data Center editions

  • 64-bit Windows Storage Server 2012, and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Workgroup or Standard editions
  • 64-bit Windows Storage Server 2012 R2, and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Workgroup or Standard editions
  • 64-bit Windows Server 2016, and later maintenance levels: Essentials, Standard or Data Center editions


Note: Windows Storage Server 2012 and 2012 R2 are only supported for functionality that is also available and supported by the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Editions.

Additional Microsoft prerequisites

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed prior to using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.6 component:

  • Windows Powershell 3 or Windows PowerShell 4
  • Windows Management Framework 3 or Windows Management Framework 4


The following prerequisites from Microsoft are also required, and are installed automatically by the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.6 if not already present on your machine.


TIP: Installation of these prerequisites may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that these prerequisites are installed before starting the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor installation process.


Note: These prerequisites are not automatically installed when you create your own silent installation package to install via msiexec. In that scenario, you must manually ensure that the prerequisites are installed.

VSS Provider requirements

The VSS provider is the snapshot component used to create and manage the volume shadow copies. This component may leverage snapshot capable storage subsystems that implement a VSS Hardware Provider that strictly adheres to the Microsoft VSS provider interface.

IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server, IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft SQL Server, and the File System and Custom Applications support feature will support any VSS Provider (including the Windows Systems Provider) that strictly adheres to the Microsoft VSS Provider interface.

Additional external storage devices supported with IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot on Windows are documented in the section External storage devices supported with VSS operations.

Refer to the documentation that was shipped with your VSS Provider in order to understand the software and hardware requirements of your specific VSS Provider.


Note: If you do not install a separate VSS Provider, the Windows System Provider will be used by default.

Base VSS Provider requirements

  • Ensure that any Microsoft hot fixes required by the VSS hardware provider used in your environment are installed. These may include, but are not limited to, hotfixes related to:
  • Host Bus Adapter (HBA)
  • Multipath I/O (MPIO)
  • Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
  • Virtual Disk Service (VDS)
  • Hotfix KB 3137726 is required when performing VSS instant Restore operations with ResyncLun API in a Windows Server 2012 environment
  • Hotfix KB 3095663 and 3137728 are required when performing VSS instant Restore operations with ResyncLun API in a Windows Server 2012 R2 environment.

Additional VSS Provider requirements

When using any of the following capabilities:

  • VSS Off-loaded backups
  • Import VSS snapshots only when needed
  • Clone Function
  • Mounting of VSS snapshots to remote servers

a VSS provider that support transportable shadow copies must be used.

Additional VSS Provider requirements for Instant Restore operations

To enable Instant restore for non-IBM devices, the following is required:

  • storage hardware and VSS Provider that support the ResyncLUNs API
  • Microsoft hotfix KB3095663. For more information about this hotfix see:

Additional VSS Provider requirements for Non-Persistent MountRW operations

To enable Instant Non-Persistent MountRW operations for IBM devices, the following is required:

  • San Volume Controller (SVC) family storage device.
  • IBM System Storage Support for Microsoft Virtual Disk and Volume Shadow Copy Services version 4.12 or higher.

External storage devices supported with VSS operations

  • Any storage device that implements the VSS provider interface as defined in the VSS Provider Requirements section of this document.


Note: These devices are not supported for Instant Restore operations unless also listed below in the list of devices that have been tested with IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 8.1.6 on Windows.

  • One of the IBM System Storage DS3000/DS4000/DS5000 family of devices, as supported by the LSI Microsoft VDS/VSS Provider 10.60.G0.04 and later maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions.


Note: These devices are not supported for Instant Restore operations

The following devices implement the VSS provider interface as defined in the VSS Provider Requirements section of this document, and have been tested with the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 8.1.6 on Windows components, with Instant Restore operations:

  • IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC): 7.3.x with:
