A server crash during a local-to-cloud transfer operation might result in unrecoverable data

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

If an IBM Spectrum Protect server crashes during a local-to-cloud transfer process to a cloud-container storage pool that is using the Simple Storage Service (S3) protocol or the Microsoft Azure cloud protocol, some containers might be marked as unavailable after the server restarts. The containers will have been transferred to the cloud device; however, the server database does not reflect the correct location. The extents within the containers are unavailable for recovery operations until the server database is modified to correctly indicate that the containers are on the cloud device.

Content

WHO IS AFFECTED:

All IBM Spectrum Protect server Version 7.1.7, 7.1.8, and 8.1 users whose storage environments include storage pools with a cloud type of S3 or Azure.

PROBLEM SUMMARY:

If the server crashes during a local-to-cloud transfer operation for a storage pool with cloud type of S3 or Azure, a container being transferred might become unavailable.

After the server is restarted, messages similar to the following example are displayed:
ANR0204I The container state for /fs/cache/9d/0000000000009d2d.dcf is updated from READONLY to UNAVAILABLE. (PROCESS: 1)
ANR3660E An unexpected error occurred while opening or writing to the container. Container /localstg/dir1/9d/0000000000009d2d.dcf in
stgpool CLOUDPOOL has been marked as UNAVAILABLE and should be audited to validate accessibility and content. (PROCESS: 1)
ANR2088E An I/O error occurred while reading container /localstg/dir1/9d/0000000000009d2d.dcf in storage pool CLOUDPOOL. (PROCESS: 1)

You can use the QUERY CONTAINER command to identify unavailable containers in a cloud-container storage pool after a server crash. Use the following command to identify a potentially affected container:
query container stgpool=stgpool_name state=unavailable

Recovery operations fail for any data within the container until the state of the container is repaired in the server database.

RECOMMENDATION:

Apply the fixing levels when available. If you require a fix before these levels become available, contact IBM Software Support to repair the state of the container information in the IBM Spectrum Protect server database.

PROBLEM RESOLUTION:

This problem will be resolved in the IBM Spectrum Protect V7.1.9 and V8.1.5 servers with APAR IT24043. This is subject to change at the sole discretion of IBM.
