ANS5226E ANS4174E Corrupt VMDK file can cause VM backup failure

Troubleshooting

Problem

VM backup operation may fail with ANS4174E RC=4379

Symptom

During a VM backup using the datamover client command line (dsmc.exe) the following errors can be seen:

ANS1228E Sending of object 'SJARCHIVE' failed.

ANS5226E The virtual machine backup operation failed.

ANS4174E Full VM backup of VMware Virtual Machine 'VM_name' failed with RC=4379 mode='Incremental Forever - mode, target node name='DataCenter_node', data mover node name='Datamover_node"

Diagnosing The Problem

  • Check and make sure a quiesced virtual machine snapshot can be taken successfully within vSphere (external to Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments)
  • Check the vmware.log file associated with the guest VM failing the backup to see what messaging exists during the snapshot time frame
  • Confirm the VMDK is accessible within the guest VM operating system (run chkdsk if necessary to confirm the consistency of the disk on Windows OS)

Resolving The Problem

In one particular case the issue was caused by a corrupt VMDK file for the guest VM that was being backed up. The issue can be resolved by the VMware administrator to confirm the consistency of the VMDK file or alternately clone the guest VM and re-create the VMDKs in order to complete the VM backup using the IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments.
