Service Bulletin 196: z/TPF support for IBM z14

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

To use the z/TPF system on the IBM® z14 (z14), ensure that you have the appropriate required APARs and fixes installed.

Content

APAR PJ42031 (PUT 11): Provides changes so that the z/TPF system can operate on a system that IPLs directly in z/Architecture® mode. The z14 is the first machine that uses this procedure, so you must have this APAR installed before you can use the z/TPF system on the z14.

Important: Before you migrate your z/TPF system to the z14, validate that the correct version of the IPLA program is on the system. If you try to IPL a z/TPF system that contains an old copy of the IPLA program (before APAR PJ42031), the z/TPF system will hang during the IPL process and you will not see any message on your z/TPF console. Ensure that you validate that the correct version of IPLA exists on every z/TPF system and every copy of those z/TPF systems (including disaster recovery copies) before you IPL any z/TPF system on a z14.

APAR PJ42031 added new z/Architecture-based PSWs to IPLA starting at offset 1A0. To confirm that you have the correct version of the IPLA program applied, complete the following steps:

  1. On the z/TPF system, enter the following command:
    ZDPGM IPLA 1A0
  2. In the resulting display message, verify that PSW 00020001 80000000 00000000 00FFFFFA is displayed. For example:
DPGM0010I 09.08.13 BEGIN DISPLAY OF FILE COPY FOR
                      IPLA VERSION
    000001A0-
    00020001 80000000 00000000 00FFFFFA ........ ........
    000001B0- 00020001 80000000 00000000 00FFFFF0 ........ .......0
END OF DISPLAY - ZEROED LINES NOT DISPLAYED

Note: To apply the updated IPLA program, you can use one of the following methods:
  • Use the general file loader (ALDR) and IPL the loader general file (LGF).
  • Apply APAR PJ44697 (PUT 14) and use the ZWIPL command to update the IPL records without performing an IPL of the LGF.

APAR PJ44689 (PUT 14): Adds support for the Crypto Express6S card, which is the new generation cryptographic accelerator on the z14. You must install this APAR if you plan to use the Crypto Express6S card.

APAR PJ44862 (PUT 14): Adds support for the OSA-Express6S card, which is the new generation OSA-Express® adapter on the z14. You must install this APAR if you plan to use the OSA-Express adapter.

For more information about APARs PJ42031, PJ44697, PJ44689, and PJ44862, see the APEDITs. For more information about using hardware accelerators and OSA-Express on the z/TPF system, see the z/TPF product documentation in IBM Documentation.
