IBM Support

Separating the Snapshot backup process versus storing the backup data

Question & Answer

Question

Is it possible to separate the Snapshot backup processing such that the data can subsequently be stored to the IBM Spectrum Protect Server at a different time.

Cause

In some cases it is desired to send the data to the IBM Spectrum Protect Server at a different time than when the snapshot is performed

Answer

Yes, it is possible to separate the snapshot backup from the offload processing to store the backup data to the Server.

When running the setup.sh script for the initial configuration of the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot software, one of the entries asks: "Do you want to start offloaded tape backups after the snapshot?". If the answer is "No", then the fcmcli daemon is not automatically started (ie. it's not put in /etc/inittab). Or if the product was already configured, it is possible to manually remove the fcmcli entry from the inittab and then run 'init q' to re-examine/re-read the inittab.

Without the fcmcli daemon running, the offloaded backups are not started automatically and they can be performed manually or by scheduling the fcmcli -f tape_backup command.
