Is it possible that applying HIPER PTFs will trigger a server version upgrade in Content Manager OnDemand for i?

Question & Answer

Question

I am planning to apply a HIPER PTF package on my IBM i system. Is there any possibility that this will trigger a server version upgrade?

Answer

From time to time a PTF for Content Manager OnDemand for i will be considered critical enough to be placed on a HIPER PTF package. While these PTFs themselves will be unlikely to trigger a server version upgrade, it is possible that they will supersede a PTF not yet applied to your system that will trigger a server version upgrade.

To view the PTFs carried in the current HIPER PTF package go to the applicable links as follows:

V7.5:

To view the PTFs carried in the current HIPER PTF Package for V7.5, go to V750 Group Hiper Preventive Service Planning.

V7.4:

To view the PTFs carried in the current HIPER PTF Package for V7.4, go to V740 Group Hiper Preventive Service Planning.

V7.3:

To view the PTFs carried in the current HIPER PTF package for V7.3, go to V730 Group Hiper Preventive Service Planning.

V7.2 (out of support):

To view the PTFs carried in the current HIPER PTF Package for V7.2, go to V720 Group Hiper Preventive Service Planning.

V7.1 (out of support):

To view the PTFs carried in the current HIPER PTF Package for V7.1, go to V710 Group Hiper Preventive Service Planning.

General:
Once you are in the applicable Group Hiper PTF, using the function of your web browser, search for "RD1". This will bring you to the first PTF for 5770RD1. (There may be more than one, so repeat the search to identify all the PTFs.)

Results of the search will look similar to the following but with valid data:

-------------------------------------------------
PTF         DATE        APAR       LICENSED CUMULATIVE
NUMBER      ADDED                  PROGRAM  PACKAGE
*************************************************
SI88888     03/24/15    SE55555    5770RD1  1000
SI99999     03/24/15    SE66666    5770RD1  1000

In all cases this may not be a complete upgrade to the new server version. There may be co/pre-requisite PTFs required as well and maybe also PTFs for other features such as the Content Manager OnDemand Web Enablement Kit (ODWEK) or the PDF Indexer (PDFI), for example.

In all cases when applying a HIPER PTF package, it is recommended to check the contents of the HIPER PTF package. If any Content Manager OnDemand PTFs are found in the HIPER PTF package that are not yet applied to your system, research these PTFs and see what they or any superseded PTFs do (documented in the click-able link of the PTF number). Then decide if you want to apply the PTF or any of the PTFs that supersede that PTF.

If you do not want to apply these PTFs, you need to specifically omit them by Product ID and PTF number during the apply of the HIPER PTF package (option 8 from the PTF menu and then Other Options = 'Y').

If you will be applying them, you may need to also apply pre- and co-requisite PTFs as well. Also review the Information APAR applicable to your release here.
