Options for clearing the data on the storage disks in the appliance depend on the type of appliance. See Power procedures if appliance power down/off is needed after the storage disk activities.
IDAA v5 systems requiring the Storage Data Clear tool to be ran on their PDA/Netezza appliance will need to reach out to support or their account team to request root access and additional steps specific to IDAA Netezza hosts cluster resources. Please only take this step if destroying all data on the storage disks is needed to decommission the appliance.
IBM Netezza Storage Data Clear Tool is available for the following systems.
- N3001 (all models, N3001-001 and larger)*
- N2002
- N2001

Usage instructions for this tool are in a separate document included in the package, accessible after installation.
To install the Storage Data Clear tool, install FDT Support Tools 2.0.0.x onto the RHEL primary host:
a. From the directory where the FDT Support Tools package is located, copy the package to the /nzscratch directory:
# cp nz-FDTSupport-2.0.0.9.tar.gz /nzscratch
b. Extract the package:
# cd /nzscratch
# tar xzvf nz-FDTSupport-2.0.0.9.tar.gz --no-same-owner
c. Extract and run the Storage Data Clear unified installer:
# tar xzvf installer.tar.gz --no-same-owner
# ./install-sdc.sh
d. Change directory:
# cd /usr/local/lib/storage-data-clear/docs
e. Open the file Storage-Data-Clear-README.txt and follow instructions.
*NOTE:
The N3001 system supports contains self-encrypting disks and supports cryptographic erase as an alternative to the Storage Data Clear Tool.
The details on Self-Encrypting Disks can be found in Chapter 6 and Chapter 10 of the Netezza System Administration Guide
The steps in that process to reinitialize and lose access to data on the storage disks:
nzstop
nzinitsystem -reinit
nzstart -newsystem
When the nzstart -newsystem brings the system Online the previous data on the SPU disks will not be seen or accessible.
For the IBM PureData System for Analytics N1001 and IBM Netezza 1000/100, use the DiskEraser tool found in FDT 2.6.1.

Download the version needed and follow the documentation to install the package. Once you have the correct FDT version unpacked on your system you need to decide what method to chose.

dod_extended : Extended DoD 5220.22-M
asci3 : Australian ASCI33 (3 Pass)
asci : Australian ASCI33 (5 Pass)

hmg : UK HMG Infosec Std.No.5
The tool is located in:
/opt/nz/fdt/
Run:
("screen" means that script will continue to run even after connection is lost)
screen ./storage_diags diskeraser --method [name of method]
Example:
screen ./storage_diags diskeraser --method clear screen ./storage_diags diskeraser --method dod3pass
