What is IMM?
Answer
IMM is the integrated management module: service processor functionality, Super I/O, video controller, and remote presence capabilities consolidated into a single chip on the server system board. Before IMM, BMC and a basic input/output system (BIOS) were the standard hardware and firmware for systems-management. IMM replaces the baseboard management controller (BMC), and Remote Supervisor Adaptor II in IBM x series servers. The current version of IMM is IMM2.
What can IMM do?
The IMM provides the following functions:
- Around-the-clock remote access and management of your server
- Remote management independent of the status of the managed server
- Remote control of hardware and operating systems
- Web-based management with standard web browsers
It has a standard set of features such as: continuous health monitoring and control, advanced Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA), e-mail alerts, remote power control, and remote firmware updating. A full list of standard IMM features can be found here.
