Installing Eclipse plugins using the command line for IBM Rational Application Developer

Question & Answer

Question

Is there a way to install Eclipse plugins to IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD) 9.0.1 through the command line? These are external open source/third party plugins not shipped with RAD.

Cause

An automated process was being used to install RAD, having this functionality available would be of benefit to install external plugins (such as Checkstyle).

Answer

RAD v9.0.x is based on Eclipse 4.2.2+ (Juno) /Web Tools Project (WTP) 3.4.2+ plus bugzilla patches with IBM JDK 1.7 SR3 and IBM Data Studio 4.1 (subset).

In the older Eclipse Indigo ( 3.7.2) it is documented by Eclipse under:
- Running update manager from command line
which points out:

"Note: The update manager command line application is deprecated. Use the <p2 director application> instead."

The <p2 director application> link in Eclipse (Juno) 4.2 is:
- Installing software using the p2 director application

These non-IBM tutorials on the p2 director application may also be useful but are not supported by IBM:

- p2 can update your eclipse.ini (Wednesday, February 15, 2012)

- Installing Eclipse features via the command line with the p2 director Posted on April 4, 2012 by Lars Vogel
