Backing up IBM Installation Manager agent data and shared files for recovery with IBM Business Process Manager (BPM)

Question & Answer

Question

What are the critical directories that you must back up in case of Installation Manager data loss or corruption?

Answer

The Installation Manager data agent directory and the shared directory contain information about the products that are installed using Installation Manager. It is important that you regularly backup these directories along with the product binary. These backed up files will help you recover from an accidental data loss.

  • Agent Data location
  • Shared Resources Directory
  • Installation Manager Registry File
  • IBM Installation Manager Installation Directory (Optional)

Agent data location

The agent data location, or appDataLocation, is the directory that IBM Installation Manager uses to record the product installation information. The data includes the state and history of all the Installation Manager operations.

Table 1. The default location of the Agent Data Location.
Operating system
Administrator installation
Non-administrator installation
Group installation
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager  C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager  Not available.
Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 2008 C:\ProgramData\IBM\Installation Manager C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\IBM\Installation Manager Not available.
Linux and UNIX-based /var/ibm/InstallationManager /user_home_directory/var/ibm/InstallationManager /user_home_directory/var/ibm/InstallationManager_Group
z/OS /InstallationManager/appdata /user_home_directory/InstallationManager/appdata /InstallationManager/appdata

If you are not using the default location, you can determine the Installation Manager Agent Data Location using one of the following methods:
  • Check the registry file for the location:
    • Windows Registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\IBM\Installation Manager\location
    • Linux and UNIX-based operating systems:  Open the /etc/.ibm/registry/InstallationManager.dat file. Look at the location entry, for example, appDataLocation=/var/ibm/InstallationManager

  • Launch the Installation Manager GUI and click Help >About IBM InstallationManager > Installation Details > and find the cic.appDataLocation value.

  • Open the IBM_Installation_Manager_installation_directory\eclipse\configuration\config.ini file and find the cic.appDataLocation value.

Shared resources directory

The shared resources directory is where installation artifacts are located that can be used by one or more package groups.

Table 2. The default shared resources directory for the IBM Business Process Manager products.
Operating system Administrator installation Non-administrator installation
AIX /opt/IBM/BPMShared /userhome/IBM/BPMShared
Linux /usr/IBM/BPMShared /userhome/IBM/BPMShared
Windows <ProgramFiles>\IBM\BPMShared <user AppData>\Roaming folder\IBM\BPMShared

If you are not using the default location, you can determine the location of the shared resources directory using one of the following methods:
  • Open agent_data_location\installed.xml file using a browser and look for shared resource directory.

  • Run the IBM_Installation_Manager/eclipse/tools/imcl listInstallationDirectories -verbose command.

Installation Manager registry file

Operating system Administrator installation Non-administrator installation

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IBM\Installation Manager

IBM Installation Manager installation directory (Optional)

You can recover the binary installation using the original Installation Manager installation image.
