Can physical tape, VTL, or Container Storage Pools be used in conjunction with IBM Spectrum Protect™ for Virtual Environments: Data Protection for VMware?

Beginning with Version 7.1.3, IBM® Tivoli® Storage Manager for Virtual Environments is now IBM Spectrum Protect™ for Virtual Environments. To learn more about the rebranding transition, see technote 1963634.
The following table summarizes IBM support for Data Protection for VMware features in the context of IBM Spectrum Protect server storage of the VM backup images.

(1) You must use the vmctlmc Backup-Archive client option on each data mover to store control information on a disk-based storage pool if backup versions are being stored on physical tape. Please see the vmctlmc option documentation for more information on usage of this option.
(2) An IBM Spectrum Protect Recovery Agent can only mount a single snapshot when recovering data from physical tape; see Configuring the IBM Spectrum Protect Recovery Agent GUI for more information on accessing data from tape.
(3) Expect slow performance as data access for individual file recovery is random in nature
(4) Consider using collocation by filespace grouping to optimize data placement on tape
(5) Requires a Spectrum Protect Server V7.1.7 or later
