Rational Rose installation fails with "Error 1603"

Troubleshooting


Problem

If you attempt to install IBM Rational Rose (Rose) on a Microsoft Windows 7 machine, the installation fails with the "Error 1603" error.

Symptom

Installing Rose on a Microsoft Windows 7 machine gives a Error 1603
message along with the following error that is written to the rational_install.log file:


MSI (c) (40:4C) [09:47:31:669]: Product: IBM Rational Rose Enterprise Edition -- Installation operation failed.

MSI (c) (40:4C) [09:47:31:670]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: IBM Rational Rose Enterprise Edition. Product Version: 2.0.0. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Rational

Software. Installation success or error status: 1603.


The following message also appears in the rational_install.log file:


1: The InstallScript engine version currently installed on this machine is adequate.
1: Event 'Ennnnnn' is created
1: GetInstallDriver, Can not find InstallDriver in ROT table, Return Code = NxNNNNNNNN
1: {NNDNNACE-ENAN-NNNE-BNNN-NANANNNDNENN}
1: Extract supporting files
1: Failed to extract _IsUser.dll, Ignore it.
1: Failed to extract IGdi.dll, Ignore it.
1: EvNNNNNNNN

Cause

There problems with the permissions when launching the DCOM applications.

Resolving The Problem

SOLUTION

Use the DCOM Configuration Tool to manage the startup policy as follows:

  1. Run C:\WINDOWS\system32\DCOMCNFG.EXE

  2. Navigate to Console Root > Component Service > Computers > My Computer > DCOM Config > InstallShiled InstallDriver

  3. Right-click and select Properties

  4. Select the Identity tab and verify that The launching user is selected

  5. Install Rational Rose installation
