Abstract

This document details the Hardware & Software requirements for FlashCopy® Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 and Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.

Content

The following components share the same hardware and software requirements. The components are:

  • FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 --> which is part of the IBM Tivoli® Storage FlashCopy® Manager 4.1 product.
  • Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1 --> which is part of the IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager for Mail 7.1 product.

Minimum hardware requirements

The following information describes the minimum hardware and disk space requirements when using FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.


x64 Hardware

The following hardware is supported for the x64 platform:
  • Compatible hardware supported by the operating system and the Microsoft Exchange Server


The following disk space is required for the x64 platform:
  • A minimum of 100 MB of disk space, and optionally:
    • At least 2.1 MB disk space for prerequisites included in the installation package (which are installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system).
    • At least 12 MB of disk space for each Language Pack to be installed (there are a total of 9 available).

TIP: Some of the above referenced prerequisites may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirements prerequisites detailed in the Additional Microsoft prerequisites section of this document are installed before starting the FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server installation process.



FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server metadata space requirements

In addition to the space that is required for the global product installation, Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager uses disk space to hold vital product data that is used to track and manage snapshots. By default, the metadata is stored in the'vss_staging' subdirectory of the FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor component's installation directory.

    TIP: The FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor component is also known as the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Backup-Archive Client.

The amount of space required is directly proportional to the number of snapshots that you maintain on the system. Ensure that there is at least 1 megabyte of available free disk space to hold the metadata for each snapshot that you plan to keep on the system.

In addition, if you are protecting a Microsoft Exchange Server, Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager keeps mailbox history information in the metadata to support individual mailbox restore (IMR) processing. The amount of space required for this is directly proportional to the number of mailboxes in the entire organization. Ensure that for each user mailbox in your organization, at least 50 kilobytes of disk space are free to hold the metadata.

Therefore, it is recommended that you have at least 200MB available for the above described metadata - though the need for more is possible depending on your operating environment.



Minimum software and operating system requirements

The following information describes the minimum software and operating system requirements when using FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.

x64

The following operating systems are supported for the x64 platform:
  • 64-bit Windows Server 2008 SP2, and later maintenance levels: Standard x64, Enterprise x64, or Data Center x64, editions
  • 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, and later maintenance levels: Standard x64, Enterprise x64, or Data Center x64, editions
  • 64-bit Windows Server 2012, and later maintenance levels: Standard or Data Center editions
  • 64-bit Windows Server 2012 R2, and later maintenance levels: Standard or Data Center editions


The following additional operating systems are supported for the x64 platform but only with the Remote Management capabilities of the MMC GUI interface:
  • 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Ultimate editions
  • 64-bit Windows 8 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Enterprise editions
  • 64-bit Windows 8.1 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Enterprise editions



Additional Operating Environments that are supported:
  • Windows Failover Clustering


The following application levels are supported:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP3, and later maintenance levels: Standard or Enterprise Editions
      Note: Microsoft requires Exchange Server 2010 SP3 in order to support Windows PowerShell 3.0.


Additional Microsoft prerequisites

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed prior to using FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1:

  • Windows PowerShell 3.0 or Windows PowerShell 4.0
  • Windows Management Framework 3.0 or Windows Management Framework 4.0


The following Microsoft Exchange prerequisite levels are supported with Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange and Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Exchange:

  • When using Microsoft Exchange 2010, the minimum level supported for Microsoft Exchange Messaging API (MAPI) Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) is version 6.5.8244.0.
  • When using Microsoft Exchange 2013, the minimum level supported for Microsoft Exchange Messaging API (MAPI) Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) is version 6.5.8320.0.

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required, and are installed automatically by FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1, if not already present on your machine.

    TIP: Installation of these prerequisites may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that these prerequisites are installed before starting the FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server installation process.

    Note: These prerequisites are not automatically installed when you create your own silent installation package to install via msiexec. In that scenario, you must manually ensure that the prerequisites are installed.

64-bit FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 and Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1 requires:

    32-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable Package

    Available from:

Additional components required


FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1 requires the following components:

  • FlashCopy Manager MMC Snapin and Base System Services 4.1

      Note: This is a component included in the Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager on Windows 4.1 package.

  • FlashCopy Manager VSS Requestor 4.1

      Note: This is a component included in the Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager on Windows 4.1 package. It is also known as the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Backup-Archive Client 7.1.


Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1 requires the following component:
  • Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Backup-Archive Client 7.1, and later 7.1.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions


Additional requirements for storage of backups in a Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Server
  • The Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) API Client 7.1, and later7.1.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions

      Note: The Tivoli Storage Manager API Version 7.1 is included and automatically installed with Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.

      Note: The Tivoli Storage Manager API Version 7.1 is included and automatically installed with FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.

  • Any Tivoli Storage Manager Server (TSM) currently in support which is supported by the version of the TSM API Client, or TSM Backup-Archive Client, used in the environment
