DataPower SLM Shaping on Error Rule Causes High Memory

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempting to use the SLM Action on an error rule in which the type of action performed is shaping can cause high memory usage.

Cause

SLM Actions are not officially supported on an error rule. It is advised when attempting to use SLM that instead you apply the action in a request or response rule only. Should a SLM action be required on an error rule it is advised that instead of using the type 'shape' that instead you use either 'throttle' or 'notify'. Attempting to use the type 'shape' may have unexpected results in which the memory will remain high and transactions will not complete.

Diagnosing The Problem

Review service policies and determine if an SLM action exists on an error rule which is being triggered and that particular SLM action is set for the type 'shape'.

Resolving The Problem

Although the SLM action is not supported on the error rule, it is advised that you instead use 'throttle' or 'notify' opposed to 'shape' as the 'shape' type will possibly cause behavior in which transactions get held up on the error rule and not cleaned up without a reboot of the appliance.
