ClearQuest clients using licenses without having the License Key Administrator installed

Question & Answer

Question

Can you setup the IBM Rational ClearQuest client to use licenseses without having IBM Rational License Key Administrator installed?

Answer

The recommended method of pointing the client machines to license server is by making use of License Key Administrator. However, an alternate method which can be used on Windows clients is defining an environment variable LM_LICENSE_FILE. Steps to change the environment variable LM LICENSE FILE:

  1. Right click the Computer icon on your desktop and click Properties

  2. In the System window click Advanced system settings in the left pane.

  3. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button

  4. In the Environment Variables window there are two columns: User variables for a username and System variables. Add a new System variable by clicking the New button

  5. In the New System Variable dialog type the Variable name and Variable value. Then click OK.

    Variable name is: LM_LICENSE_FILE
Variable value is: <port for lmgrd>@<hostname of license server>
    Example variable value: 27000@licserv1

  6. Click OK in the Environment Variables dialog window

  7. Click OK in the System Properties window

  8. Close the System window

  9. Reboot Microsoft Windows
