CONTROLLING JOBS ON SA WORKSTATIONS

Question & Answer

Question

How can a user prevent any operations from starting on a TWSz System Automation Workstation?

Cause

A new function in TWSz V9R2 enables the user to set SA workstations OFFLINE. For all previous releases, the following applies.

A TWSz SA workstation is a special configuration of a GENERAL AUTOMATIC workstation. Since GA workstations are PASSIVE -- they do not initiate actions, but only report what is done outside of TWSz, there is no option in TWSz to set them OFFLINE.

But an SA workstation DOES initiate action by sending a command to NETVIEW System Automation. Thus it may be necessary to "QUIESCE" an SA workstation to prevent operations scheduled on that workstation from starting.

Answer

Although an SA workstation cannot be set OFFLINE, it can be "closed" by modifying an availability interval to specify that no (zero) workstation parallel servers are available during that interval.

This can be done in the TWSz ISPF dialogs, option 5.5

1) On the 5.5 workstation list filter panel EQQWWSEP (SPECIFYING WORK STATION LIST CRITERIA) enter the name of the workstation to be updated, or place a Y to the right of the AUTOMATION option and leave all other fields blank. Press ENTER.

2) On panel EQQMWSLL (MODIFYING WORK STATIONS IN THE CURRENT PLAN) enter rowcommand S to the left of the workstation to be updated.

3) ON panel EQQMWSRP (MODIFYING A WORK STATION IN THE CURRENT PLAN) enter command O to display panel EQQMWSOL (MODIFYING OPEN TIME INTERVALS IN THE CP).

4. On panel EQQMWSOL, set the number of PARALLEL SERVERS (PS) under the MODIFIED header on the right of the panel to zero (0) for the desired intervals.

5) This change will remain in effect until the modified interval expires or until another manual modification, whichever comes first. (Note, you can define new intervals on this panel if necessary).

WORKSTATION AVAILABILITY INTERVALS can also be modified through the PIF (Program InterFace). TWSz SEQQSAMP member EQQPIFWI provides source code for a program to do this.
