FlashCopy Manager Oracle requires the use of an Oracle catalog database

Question & Answer

Question

When protecting data with Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Oracle, is an Oracle recovery catalog database required for all snapshot types (local and off-loaded backups)?

Answer

The Oracle recovery catalog database is required when using Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager for Oracle software to save the data. This requirement does not depend on backup type. This requirement applies when the FlashCopy backup is a local snapshot and for the off-loaded backups.

The FlashCopy Manager uses RMAN to create a copy of the Oracle control file in the FlashCopy Manager repository. Even for the FlashCopy Manager disk only backups, the RMAN catalog is still necessary as it uses this to track the control file backup.
