"Invalid Report Server URI ... The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized" when testing report server inside Controller Configuration

Troubleshooting


Problem

Administrator launches Controller Configuration. Administrator opens 'Report Server' section, and clicks green 'tick' box. An error appears.

Symptom

IBM Cognos Controller Configuration
Invalid Report Server URI.
[Details] [OK]

Error Details
The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.

Cause

Code production issue (APAR PM71082) in Controller.

Environment

Report Server (typically the Controller application server)'s IIS website configured to allow Single Sign On (SSO).

  • In other words, it is configured to use Windows authentication (i.e. NOT the default 'anonymous' authentication).

Resolving The Problem

Fix:
Upgrade to Controller 10.1.1 FP1 (10.1.1671) or later.

Workaround:
Reconfigure the report server (e.g. Controller application server)'s IIS website to use anonymous authentication.

  • NOTE: This will disable single sign on (SSO).
    Steps:
    The following steps are based on Windows 2008:
    1. Open "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager"
    2. Expand <servername>\Sites
    3. Select (highlight) "Default Web Site"
    4. Inside the right-hand window, double-click on "Authentication" modify the setting "Anonymous Authentication" to "Enabled"
    5. Modify the setting "Windows Authentication" to "Disabled"
