DataPower File System Explained

Question & Answer

Question

What is included in the encrypted, temporary, and internal directories in the IBM DataPower Gateway Appliances?

Answer

The IBM DataPower Gateway Appliance's file system is split primarily into 3 sections; Encrypted space, Temporary space, and Internal space.
How to check filesystem space information:
  • CLI command: "show filesystem
  • WebGUI: Status -> Filesystem Information

Encrypted Space:
The encrypted space is the internal persistent storage on the appliance. The following is included in the encrypted space:
  • Local, store, logstore, cert, pubcert, sharedcert, chkpoints, config, and tasktemplate directories
  • Audit logs
  • Persisted internal firmware files.
  • Rollback Firmware Image
  • *Notes:
    • It is not recommended to write high volumes or large log files to the "logstore" directory.
    • It is not recommended to store many or large user files in the "local" or "store" directories.
    • It is recommended that you use off the appliance storage or the available auxiliary storage on the appliance to write the log files by using a logging target.
    • The auxiliary storage is not initialized by default. See Setting up and troubleshooting the RAID Array for important steps for initializing and using the RAID array. If the RAID or Compact Flash is configured, the directory can be found in the 'Logstore' and "Local" directories.
    • The Rollback firmware image is a "snapshot" of the appliance taken at the time of the last upgrade. This image can be deleted to free up encrypted space if needed. • Only delete the "Rollback Image" if you are certain you do not need to return to the prior configuration and firmware level.
Temporary and Internal Space:
The "temporary" and "internal" spaces are not persisted storage. If the appliance reboots or powers down, the files in the spaces are lost. If the "Reload" option is used, the files will not be cleared.
  • The temporary space includes these user accessible directories: temporary, image, export, and logtemp.
  • The internal space is not accessible by the user.
Both the "temporary" and "internal" space is also used for various processing actions during operation.
  • *Notes:
    • It is not possible to account for all the space displayed in the "show filesystem" output by adding the file sizes. There are internal files as well as the "rollback image" that are not visible to the user.
    • In some appliances, the "temporary" and "internal" space listed in the "show filesystem" output varies based on each firmware release. This is due to how the available memory is used in each release.
Examples:

The 2018.4.1.x firmware:
idg# show filesystem
Free encrypted space: 13401 Mbytes
Total encrypted space: 15008 Mbytes
Free temporary space: 3978 Mbytes
Total temporary space: 4096 Mbytes
Free internal space: 3071 Mbytes
Total internal space: 3072 Mbytes

The 10.0.1.x firmware:
idg# show filesystem

Free encrypted space: 12434 Mbytes
Total encrypted space: 15008 Mbytes
Free temporary space: 3862 Mbytes
Total temporary space: 4096 Mbytes
Free internal space: 3070 Mbytes
Total internal space: 3072 Mbytes
