Assertion Failed error

Troubleshooting

Problem

When I go to launch my SPSS, I get the following error: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Assertion failed! Program: C:\Program Files\SPSS\spsswin.exe File:../../../src/share/native/sun/awt/.../fontObject.cpp Line: 506 Expression: errno==0 && count==(size_t) size Abort, Retry, Ignore My only option is to abort. What is wrong?

Resolving The Problem

This is a bug in the Java runtime environment for Windows caused by an invalid or corrupt font file in the system fonts directory (c:\winnt\fonts or c:\windows\fonts). The only remedy is to remove the offending file(s). In the system fonts directory:

1. Check to be sure that all the font "files" are really the font file, and not a "link" to the actual file. If any links exist, locate the target (actual file), remove the link, and then copy the actual file into the directory.

2. Using 'explorer', click on each and every file in the directory. Valid files will bring up the font editor, invalid ones will not. Move the invalid ones to a different directory.

Or, try the following:

1. Create a new folder under your C drive.
2. Go to your Fonts folder (C:\WINNT\Fonts or C:\Windows\Fonts) and copy all of the files into the new folder you created from step 1.
3. Go to the Command Prompt from within Windows and change the directory to the Fonts directory, like: cd c:\windows\fonts
4. Next, type: del *.*
5. Go back to your Fonts folder and you should see most of the files in there deleted. Now, go to File->Install New Fonts and browse to the new folder under the C drive where you backed up your fonts from step 2. Click the Select All button once all the fonts have been loaded and then click Install to install all the fonts back into your system.
8. Finally, delete the new folder containing your backed up fonts.
