Importing a large file into SPSS

Troubleshooting

Problem

I am using SPSS version 14.x or higher for Windows and I am importing into an external hard disk with 300 gig space. When I try to do this, I see an error message: Error: Command name: SAVE Temporary file write error: file name g:\..... This command not executed. Error # 1408 Error when exporting the data to a new file. Warning # 5322. Command name: Save The attempt to save the data file has failed because the disk is full, an I/O error has occurred, the variable dictionary is invalid, or the task was interrupted. IF SAVING OVER AN EXISTING FILE, THAT FILE HAS BEEN LOST. What is the problem?

Resolving The Problem

Check your external hard drive format. We recommend using NTFS format.

This error has also been seen in cases where one or both of the source files was corrupted. You can test for most forms of corruption by running a frequency (Analyze->Descriptive Statistics->Frequency) against all your variables. If the frequency analysis works without error your source data file is usually going to be ok.
