Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client is automatically removed when Tivoli Storage Manager server is updated to version 6.2.2.0 and later on AIX systems

Problem

The backup-archive client is automatically removed on AIX systems when the server is updated to version 6.2.2.0 and later. This only occurs if the Tivoli Storage Manager version 6.1 or 6.2 backup-archive client has already been installed on the system. The backup-archive client is automatically removed but the Tivoli Storage Manager client API is still installed.

Symptom

The Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client is no longer installed after upgrading the Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Cause

When upgrading the Tivoli Storage Manager server, the client API also gets upgraded. The client API is provided with the server installer because it is needed to back up the server database. During the client API upgrade, old client API versions are removed before installing the version available with the Tivoli Storage Manager server installer. The problem is that on AIX the TSM backup-archive client depends on the TSM client API and when we remove the client API the TSM backup-archive client also gets removed.

Environment

Tivoli Storage Manager server versions 6.2.2.0 and above on AIX systems.

Diagnosing The Problem

After running the Tivoli Storage Manager server 6.2.2.x upgrade, check the AIX registry for the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client. You can query the AIX registry for the backup-archive client by issuing this command:

lslpp -l tivoli.tsm.client.ba*.

If the client is installed, the various client filesets are displayed. If no client is installed, a message stating that tivoli.tsm.client.ba* filesets are not installed is displayed.
