DB2 upgrade when FlashCopy Manager is installed

Question & Answer

Question

What processing will occur during a DB2 upgrade, specifically will the FlashCopy Manager files be overwritten?

Cause

During the Flash Copy Manager installation, the install process will place some files into /usr/tivoli/tsfcm/* directory and also into the database-specific location, /db2/db2XXX/sqllib/acs. This replaces the files that previously existed in the /db2/db2XXX/sqllib/acs directory.

Answer

The installation of Flash Copy Manager is intended to overwrite the limited Advanced Copy Services version shipped with DB2. As documented in the Flash Copy Manager manual, this will overwrite or update the files that existed in the database specific location.

After Flash Copy Manager has been installed, the DB2 Advanced Copy Services component will no longer be updated by DB2 fixpacks. During a fixpack installation the DB2 install script checks if Flash Copy Manager has been installed (by looking for a license file installed by Flash Copy Manager). If a Flash Copy Manager installation is detected, the update of the Advanced Copy Services component is skipped, the remainder of the DB2 fixpack will install properly. This ensures that
(1) the fixpack will install correctly and
(2) Flash Copy Manager will not be altered unexpectedly.
