Recommended Base Software Stack for InfoSphere Balanced Warehouse E7100 for AIX

News

Abstract

This document describes the current software stack validated for the InfoSphere Balanced Warehouse E7100 for AIX.

Content

The recommendations are based on a philosophy that stability in the InfoSphere Balanced Warehouse takes precedence over functionality and performance. This document provides supplemental information, corrections, and clarifications to the documentation at the IBM InfoSphere Balanced Warehouse download site.

Balanced Warehouse Support strongly recommends that you remain on a validated software and firmware stack for a Balanced Warehouse environment. The software and firmware levels within a validated stack have been tested together by IBM, which helps to ensure that the entire stack is a stable working environment. If you must deviate from a validated stack, consult the FAQ about software and firmware upgrades.

For information about past recommended software stacks, consult the version history of the recommended base software stack.

E7100 Balanced Warehouse (Based on Power 570 2 dual-core 4.7 GHz POWER6 and DS4800)

Current software stack (Jan 24, 2011):

Based on DB2 V9.7

  • AIX 6.1 TL6 SP1
  • DB2 Version 9.7 Fix Pack (FP) 4 -- Updated from FP 3a on March 18, 2011, and then from FP3a special build 26355 on April 21, 2011
  • InfoSphere Warehouse Version 9.7.2
  • IBM Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms Version 3.1 FP 7 with RSCT 3.1.0.1 for optional high availability (HA) solutions

Based on DB2 V9.5
  • AIX 6.1 TL6 SP1
  • DB2 Version 9.5 FP 7 -- Updated from FP 6a on April 5, 2011
  • InfoSphere Warehouse Version 9.5.2
  • IBM Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms Version 3.1 FP 7 with RSCT 3.1.0.1 for optional high availability (HA) solutions

Current documentation:
  • IBM InfoSphere Balanced Warehouse E7100 with InfoSphere Warehouse Version 9.5.1: Design and Implementation
    -GA version (June, 2008)
  • IBM InfoSphere Balanced Warehouse E7100 with DB2 Data Warehouse Edition Version 9.1.2: Design and Implementation
    -01 refresh (June, 2008)

General guidelines:
  • The new firmware level validated for the DS4800 storage controller (7.60.40.00) does not support RDAC. For a link to the validated firmware stack, see this technote. With this storage controller firmware level, the new recommended multipath driver is MPIO. To check the current driver, issue the following command as the root user:
    manage_disk_drivers -l
To update the driver to MPIO, issue the following commands:
    manage_disk_drivers -d DS4800 -o AIX_APPCM
    bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice
Then reboot the server. For more information about MPIO, see the AIX Information Center.
  • After you update to the new validated AIX level (AIX 6.1 TL6 SP1), it is recommended that you enable medium pages if they were previously disabled. For instructions to enable medium page, follow the steps in this technote. If you are still on the older validated AIX level (AIX 6.1 TL2 SP3), it is recommended that you keep medium pages disabled.
  • Customers using DB2 V9.5 should only enable IOCP if they have upgraded to FP5, which contains the fix for APAR IZ54743. Customers on any level of DB2 V9.7 can also leave IOCP enabled, which is the default behavior on this version of DB2.
  • Ensure that the DB2 Fault Monitor is turned off for all DB2 instances.

  • db2fm -i <instancename> -D
    db2fmcu -d
  • For all other parameter settings, consult the Balanced Warehouse documentation.

For details on APARs mentioned in this document and other known issues for DB2 on AIX and previous hardware generations, refer to the document Known issues for DB2 on AIX 5.2, 5.3, 6.1, and 7.1. This document is updated on a regular basis.
