IBM Rational Team Concert Eclipse client installation fails

Troubleshooting


Problem

Attempts to install IBM Rational Team Concert Eclipse Client results in the inability to unzip the files and install the client.

Symptom

An error occurs during the client installation process explaining that the files required do not exist.

Note: The example below is for an IBM Rational Team Concert Eclipse Client V2.0.


    Error installing.
          Adding zip org.eclipse.equinox.p2.bootstrap.repository.win32.win32.x86 3.4.200.R342_v20090122-989JESTEbig-SVaL8UJHcYBr4A63-1238190597667 to repository x:\IBM\IBMIMShared failed.

The unzip output shows what really happened and why the files were skipped in the extraction process:

Cause

The path and file name given to the bootstrap installer, which calls the Installation Manager to begin the installation, is too long to be recognizable. Because the file cannot be unzipped, it is skipped and the installation fails.

The Microsoft Windows Operating System sets the default maximum number of characters for a file and path name at 256 to 260. When using the default naming convention given to this install from Passport Advantage or Jazz.net is used, the path name character limit is exceeded and the unzip fails.

Resolving The Problem

To work around this problem, Choose one of the following methods:

  • Rename the client zip, IBM Rational Team Concert - Client for Eclipse IDE V2.0 Windows 32-bit, to a shorter name to prevent the path from exceeding this limit.
  • You can unzip the client zip file to a shorter location instead of using the default of IBM Rational Team Concert - Client for Eclipse IDE V2.0 Windows 32-bit/RTC-Eclipse-Client-2.0-Win32-Local which adds 107 additional characters to the already lengthy bootstrap files.

    For example, rename the file, RTC-Eclipse-Client-2.0-Win32-Local .zip to RTC2client.zip and unzip the file at the root instead of in the path, IBM Rational Team Concert - Client for Eclipse IDE V2.0 Windows 32-bit./RTC-Eclipse-Client-2.0-Win32-Local.
  • Try a third party zip utility instead of the Windows built-in Extract Compressed Folders.
    If you use a third party zip utility, check to make sure there are no limitations on the zip file and path length that may prevent the file from being extracted.

Note: The examples above use the IBM Rational Team Concert V2.0 client. This can apply to the V3.0 or V3.0ifix1 and 4.0.x client as well. Substitute the name with the appropriate version.
