Problem
User clicks 'Maintain - Rights - Users'. User performs a range of tasks, inside this menu. All of these are very slow.
Symptom
Inside the 'Maintain - Rights - Users', the user it attempting to perform a task which queries the Cognos 8 BI server's security system. For example:
- Press the ellipsis button for the CAM User
- Change the value for CAM User (control on the form and tab/click outside of it, which therefore forces Controller to validate)
- Click on a user in the list to the left, this will bring up the user information in the controls to the right. Make a change in the user information, but do not change value for the CAM User. For example, change the 'User Group' and press the 'Save' button. The save button will force validation on all controls on the form, including the 'CAM User'
Performance of Controller is slow during the use of the above 3 scenarios
Cause
There are other potential causes for slow performance.
- For example, see separate IBM Technote #1606662.
This Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause is a code production problem (defect) in Controller 8.4 RTM and earlier versions.
- This causes Controller to (extremely) frequently communicate to the Cognos 8 report server (to update the list of Cognos 8 users) during many different tasks.
- This can cause slow performance inside complicated Active Directory environments.
Environment
Cognos 8 security enabled (in other words, not using the default 'native' security).
Resolving The Problem
Upgrade to Controller 8.4.119 or later.
In this (and later Controller releases) the menu has been modified so it does not automatically check/query the Cognos 8 Report Server each time a change is made. This increases the speed, but means that the user may have to exit the menu item in order to see any changes to the Cognos 8 user security configuration.
