"Total Connection Limit" setting in MQ manager in a DataPower Gateway

Question & Answer

Question

Why do I see more MQ connections than the "Total Connection Limit" set in the MQ queue manager?

Answer

When the "Total Connection Limit" is set to a specific number, there will be at most that number of active MQ connections; however, if a connection has an error or is otherwise marked to be closed, a new connection may be opened before the old one is finished closing. For instance, a connection may have to wait for time-out.

If there are many connections that are waiting to be closed, it is possible to see the number of MQ connections grow higher than the "Total Connection Limit" but then drop back to or below the number specified after the traffic has slowed or stopped and the connections have had a chance to be cleaned up.

Note: Setting the "Total Connection Limit" too low may cause delays in processing messages and can, in some cases, lead to deadlock. The best value to use for "Total Connection Limit" will depend on your environment and should be determined during performance testing.
