Troubleshooting


Problem

Message IST1411I INOP GENERATED FOR resourcename is issued, followed by this message:[
] IST1412I CLOSE_STATION_INDICATION RECEIVED - RETURN CODE FF76.

Cause

IST1412I indicates that the LAN operation CLOSE_STATION_INDICATION was received, indicating a change in connectivity. The specific type of change in connectivity is indicated by the return code FF76, which was issued for the resource named in message IST1411I. The return code FF76 indicates that a frame reject (FRMR) was sent to the downstream PU (DSPU). The reason for the frame reject is one of the following:

           
°   MAC frame control field not valid          
                                               
°   I-field contains data that is not valid    
    for that control field included in a SABME
                                               
°   The received I-field length exceeds the    
    buffer                                    
                                               
°   LPDU control field sequence number error  
                                               
°   The FRMR response I-field is not five      
    bytes in length    
                     

This FF76 code indicates that the Open Systems Adapter (OSA) received an INVALID FRAME from the remote node. VTAM does not set this code. VTAM is only reporting the error.

This problem of a frame reject being sent to the downstream PU (DSPU) is not the result of a VTAM defect. Rather, it is the result of either a hardware problem or a problem in the network.

Resolving The Problem

Follow these steps to resolve the problem:


  1. Reroute traffic to avoid the OSA that is possibly malfunctioning.

  2. Set up a network sniffer trace on the network link between the OSA and the network vendor.

  3. Open a hardware problem with IBM OSA product engineering. To do this, call 1-800-IBM-SERV, select Hardware Support, and request OSA product engineering.

  4. Consult with your network provider.
