Problem
This technote details a known defect that causes the checkout to fail with 'Loaded but missing' in an IBM Rational ClearCase snapshot view when the element version is being accessed using a symbolic link (symlink).
Cause
Symlinks cannot be checked out as detailed in technote 1220890. However, when working in a snapshot view, using the Check Out... option under the Symlink Target Options should checkout the element version to the view.
Attempting to checkout the symlink target from within the snapshot view fails and the link's state changes to Loaded but missing:
Note: This behavior only occurs within snapshot views when using same-VOB or cross-VOB symlinks.
Note: To clear the Loaded but missing state, you need to cancel the checkout of the element version from within the source VOB. One method is to right-click the VOB, choose Find Checkouts, then Undo Checkout:
Resolving The Problem
The decision was made by Product Management to exclude the resolution of this defect from future upgrades and releases due to the significant architectural changes required to implement the solution.
WORKAROUNDS:
To prevent this issue from occurring, you need to use either of the following options:
- Use a dynamic view, as detailed in technote 1146295
or
- If a dynamic view is not an option, then Warp To Symlink Target from the Symlink Target Options and checkout the file directly from within the source VOB.
