Upgrading Rational Software Development Platform version 7.0 to Microsoft Windows Vista

Question & Answer

Question

What is the recommended method for installing version 7.0.0.2 IBM Rational Software Development Platform products on Microsoft Windows Vista for clients who are upgrading from Windows XP?

Answer

Starting with version 7.0.0.2, Microsoft Windows Vista is supported on products in the Rational Software Development Platform.

It is recommended that you install version 7.0.0.2 (or later) Rational Software Development Platform products on a Windows Vista computer that did not previously have a Rational Software Development Platform product installed on it prior to being upgraded to Windows Vista.

If you have not already installed a version 7.0 or version 7.0.0.1 product on your system, then upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista before you install the version 7.0.0.2 product (version 7.0 and version 7.0.0.2 fix pack). For instructions on installing on a product for the first time on Windows Vista, refer to the installation instructions in the Readme for the product.

If you have already installed a version 7.0, 7.0.0.1, or 7.0.0.2 product on your Windows XP computer and you are upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista, then follow these steps before upgrading to Windows Vista:

  1. Uninstall all Rational Software Development Platform products on your computer as well as IBM Installation Manager.
  2. Upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
  3. Install IBM Installation Manager, version 1.0.0.3 and then re-install your Rational Software Development Platform product at version 7.0.0.2.

For instructions on installing the version 7.0.0.2 product, refer to the installation instructions in the version 7.0.0.2 Readme file for the product.

In the case that your computer has already been upgraded to Windows Vista from Windows XP and a Rational Software Development Platform product (version 7.0, 7.0.0.1, or 7.0.0.2 ) was installed on the computer before the operating system upgrade, then you must uninstall all Rational Software Development Platform products on your computer as well as IBM Installation Manager.
Important: If you cannot start Installation Manager (and, therefore, cannot uninstall the products), follow the manual uninstall steps below to remove Installation Manager and the corresponding product. If you have more than one product installed, check and follow each of the product's uninstall steps.

Manually uninstalling the features WebSphere Application Server, version 6.0 and WebSphere Application Server, version 6.1
If you installed the features WebSphere Application Server, version 6.0 or WebSphere Application Server, version 6.1 when you installed your product, then you must uninstall it manually by running the uninstall program for this feature.
To manually uninstall this feature, complete the following steps:
  1. In an Explore window, navigate to the following directory:
    • For WebSphere Application Server, version 6.0: <Installation directory>\runtimes\base_v6\_uninst
    • For WebSphere Application Server, version 6.1: <Installation directory>\runtimes\base_v61\uninstall
      (Note: By default, <Installation directory> is C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP70).
  2. Start the uninstall program uninstall.exe.
(Note: the file extension might not be displayed, so the file might appear to names as uninstall.):
    • On Windows XP: Double-click uninstall.exe.
    • On Windows Vista: Right-click uninstall.exe and click Run as administrator. When prompted by the User Account Control dialog box, click Allow. I trust this program. I know where it's from or I've used it before.
  3. The Install Shield Wizard starts. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the version of WebSphere Application Server.
Note: If the "Program Compatibility Assistant" dialog box opens during the process, click Cancel.
(These steps are not necessary for the WebSphere Application Server, version 5.1 feature; it will be uninstalled when you uninstall the Rational Software Development Platform program.)

Manually uninstalling Rational Agent Controller
If you attempt to uninstall Rational Agent Controller and the uninstall program gives an error message that it cannot be uninstalled as it is being referenced by another product, try the following steps to uninstall Agent Controller:
  1. In a text editor, open the file C:\WINDOWS\IBM\IBMAGENT_70\.sdpinst\cdi_ref.properties
  2. Examine the line ibmrac_reference_7.products
    1. If it contains a product ID other than "ibmrac", then you need to pass this ID to the uninstall program. For example, run uninstall.exe -W prod_id_uninstall.value=product_X
    2. If more multiple product IDs are listed, then change the line to:  ibmrac_reference_7.products=ibmrac and run 'uninstall.exe' without any parameters.
    3. If no product id is found add a line ibmrac_reference_7.products=ibmrac and run 'uninstall.exe' without any parameters.
If the method above does not work, try the following steps:
  1. Run _uninstall\uninstall.exe -W refcounting.active=false
  2. Remove cdi_ref.properties

If you receive an error "java.lang.ClassCastException: com.installshield.product.service.registry.LoggedSoftwareObject", then InstallShield database might be corrupted. In this case, delete the ibmrac directory from C:\Program FIles\Common Files\InstallShield\Universal\*\

    (By default, <rpt installation directory> is C:\Program Files\IBM\RPT70).
For example, change to C:\Program Files\IBM\RPT70\rpt\DCI\_uninst.
  3. Run uninstall -W prod_id_uninstall.value=ibmrpt.
  4. The uninstall wizard starts. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall IBM Data Collection Infrastructure.
