How to import permanent license keys in Silent mode into version 7 Eclipse-based Rational products

Question

To silently import a permanent license key into version 7 Rational Software Development Platform (SDP) desktop products, you need to create a response file for IBM® Installation Manger (IM). This technote provides complete instructions on how to create a response file and also contains a sample response file you can download.

Create a response file

Follow these steps to create a response file for importing a permanent license key for Rational Software Development Platform (SDP) products version 7.

IM version 1.0.0.x
  1. At the command prompt, cd to <Installation Manager directory>\eclipse and run launcher.bat –record <ResponseFile>
    (launcher.bat is found in the eclipse directory of IM)
  2. In IM, go to Manage License, then Select the product that you would like import the license to
  3. Select Import product Activation Kit > Next
  4. Browse … > Select <PRODUCTlic>.jar > Next
  5. Accept the terms in the license agreements > Next > Finish > Finish
  6. Select File > Exit (IM will generate the response file after this step)

Import the license key with the response file


IM version 1.0.0.x
    For Microsoft® Windows®:
      launcher.bat –silent –input <ResponseFile> -log <LogFile>

      For example,
      launcher.bat –silent –input C:\responsefile_license.xml –log c:\log_license.xml

    For Linux®:
      % launcher.sh –nosplash –silent –input <ResponseFile> -log <LogFile>
IM version 1.1.x

    For Microsoft Windows and Linux:

      IBMIM --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input  <ResponseFile> -log <LogFile>

      If IM imported the license key successfully, the following lines will be in the log file:

      <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> 
      <result />

You can download a pre-created response file from this technote as an example - see the attached file below.
Note: To use the pre-created response file, you will need to modify the path of the license jar and the SDP70Shared directory to match with your settings. Also, this response file works only with IM Version 1.0. If a newer version of IM is in use, you need to create a new response file.
