About ClearCase LT in an interoperation (interop) environment

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote overviews the functionality of IBM® Rational® ClearCase LT® when working in an interoperation (interop) configuration with UNIX® or Linux® and Microsoft® Windows®.

Resolving The Problem

Rational ClearCase LT can be configured to work in an interop environment where the VOBs are on UNIX or Linux and the clients are on Windows, or vice-versa (with the VOBs on Windows and the clients on UNIX or Linux).

In a network where the ClearCase LT VOBs are on a UNIX or Linux server, the Windows clients can be in a domain and/or a non-domain (workgroup) configuration since the shared data will reside on the ClearCase LT server.

Note: This is not applicable if the ClearCase LT server is on Windows and the clients are UNIX or Linux because the clients can only be configured to access a single server, whether it is in a domain or a workgroup configuration.

This cross-platform functionality is made possible by ClearCase File Server (CCFS), which is a TCP/IP-based mechanism for file transfers between the operating systems.

Note: CCFS is enabled by default in ClearCase LT, and cannot be disabled as it is a required protocol.

For this configuration to work, all the users' usernames and their primary groups must have matching usernames and primary groups on both operating systems. Refer to technote 1146784 for more details.

When configuring the ClearCase LT server on Windows, you must specify the domain in which user and group names will be verified when UNIX or Linux clients request access to the Windows server; refer to technote 1135399 for more details.

A ClearCase LT client must point to a ClearCase LT server. This server can be UNIX, Linux or Windows, regardless of what platform is running on the client.

VOBs must be created directly on the server, which is standard even in a homogeneous ClearCase LT environment. You can be logged in physically at the server, or for a ClearCase LT server:

Views can be created from the client, refer to technote 1121208 for more details.
