What is the behavior behind replicating symbolic links (cleartool ln -s) that connect two VOBs when using IBM Rational ClearCase MultiSite?
Answer
VOB Symbolic links (symlinks) synchronize when the VOB is replicated.
It is necessary to maintain consistency in the VOB tag names between the sites for the link to continue working after the replica creation packets are imported. If the VOB tags are different between sites, then the symlink from the replicating site is invalid at the site that imports the replica creation packets.
For example, Site A has two VOBs, \TAG1 and \TAG2, and there is a symlink from \TAG1 to \TAG2. Site A replicates both VOBs with Site B. When site B imports the replica creation packets, the VOB tags are changed to \TAG11 and \TAG22. The symlink from Site A is no longer valid in this configuration, and a new link will need to be created.
To preserve the link at Site B, the VOB tags will need to be the same as the VOB tags at Site A, \TAG1 and TAG2.
Note: ClearCase is case sensitive, hence, the case of the VOB tags must be identical also; \TAG1 is not the same as \tag1.
