MVFS file system is not installed or not loaded on Solaris 10

Troubleshooting


Problem

During installation of IBM® Rational® ClearCase® version 2003.06.00 on Solaris® 10 operating system, some MVFS errors can occur, such as []the MVFS file system is not installed or not loaded or the 'viewroot' is not mounted or is inaccessible[].

Cause

During installation of ClearCase on Solaris 10, you may receive this error:

Loading MVFS ...
mount: Error: unable to open mount table
Trouble mounting the viewroot "/view"(16:1)
mvfslog: Error: The MVFS file system is not installed or not loaded,
or the 'viewroot' is not mounted or is inaccessible: not a ClearCase object.
Trouble setting MVFS kernel log file to
/var/adm/rational/clearcase/log/mvfs_log(2:1)
Mounting public VOBs...
cleartool: Error: The MVFS file system is not installed or not loaded,
or the 'viewroot' is not mounted or is inaccessible: not a ClearCase object.
Trouble mounting public VOBs(32:1)

The errors will continue, and the MVFS will not load into the kernel.

A supported version of Solaris 10 is not in use.

Resolving The Problem


Check to see which version of Solaris 10 is installed:

Example 1:

% uname -r
5.10.1

% cat /etc/release
Solaris 10.1 nv_10 SPARC

The above output indicates that the OpenSolaris™ kernel is being used.
The OpenSolaris and Solaris Next™ operating systems are not supported for use with ClearCase at this time.

Note: Solaris Next is the latest in versions of OpenSolaris based upon Solaris 10. Thus, the code name, Nevada, designates this release as Solaris Nevada build 10.


Example 2:

%uname -a
SunOS rational 5.10 s10_72 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4

The above output indicates that the s10_72 kernel (which is an open source version of Solaris 10) is in use. This version is unsupported as well.

Review the ClearCase Supported Family Releases technote for updates to the latest operating systems to which ClearCase currently provides support.

You will need to reinstall the operating system with a supported version (non-open source version) of Solaris 10 before installing ClearCase.
